I realize this was probably discussed ages ago but the arcade near my house
just installed one of these and I'm curious as to what a "good" time on the
Beginner course is...

After about an hour and $2, I managed a best lap of 38.90 with a string of
three consecutive laps under 39.00 before the "tires" went off but I'll bet
there's AT LEAST another .5 second still out there ... any info/times would
be greatly appreciated.

Every day me and my co-workers would go to the mall and play 3 or 4 games.
Things that we found that helped were: shifting for your self, and falling
behind.

Yes, thats right, falling behind in two player mode.
To keep the race competivite the computer will speed up the car in 2nd place.
I didn't say I won the race I pulled those laps in.
In fact my ass was kicked rather hard that game.

Try 2 player and shift for yourself.
Good luck!

Besides that who would want to be Prost when you could be Senna.

From the sounds of things you're playing different games. We've got a
Megadrive in our house with VR on this (I've also played the arcade) and
there's NO choice of cars and the fastest lap I've done (with opposition is
38.63s on the basic track. I've pl;ayed a game that allows you to choose
the constructor of your choice (Williams, McLaren, Ferrari & Benetton).
This could be the one that the other posting means.
