GPL multiplay & RoadRunner - yes? no? firewall?

by Benjam » Tue, 06 Jun 2000 04:00:00

A friend and me have connected GPL with TCP/IP with no problems other
than the normal internet stuff - he recently got Road Runner cable
service for his connection (I'm still using the ol' 56k modem) and he
cannot host or join... When I try to connect to his IP address, it
times out and never attempts to connect - he tried to join me, and
basically didn't have any TCP/IP options (under the "Connect Via")

The only thing I can figure having no knowledge of Road Runner is that
maybe there's a firewall since it's always connected and GPL isn't
liking it....?

Any body been there, done that? or is he gonna have to dust off the
regular modem for it? We're both using version 1.1 (never have
bothered with the 1.2 patch...)

Heap Thanx

Well I know it is possible but I think you have to tweak one of the *.ini files
in the GPL directory.  Also download the 1.2 patch cause I know it addresses
some online problems and there *SHOULD* be the *.ini file tweaks in the readme
for the patch.  Maybe someone can point you in the right direction on the net
for how to do it.  Sorry I cant be of more help...

It might just be Road Runner at the moment.

We had to abandon the possibility of running a league race on a Road Runner
based server last niight. It was failing to score any laps for anyone and
the skew meter was slowly rising between intermittent clock smashes. After
doing a trace, it was found that there was a very bad hop just before the
server.

I have Road Runner, and had it up and running with GPL in a couple of
minutes.
The problem is that GPL is looking for a dialup connection to resolve your
IP  address, and you don't have a dialup connection.

That's ok. Go into your core.ini file and under the header [Communications]
you'll find the line ..... allow_alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 0 ;

Change the value to 1, i.e. true, and you'll be online with GPL like you've
never been online before.

I knew there was a reason I thought of checking here first... :o)

Thanx a ton
