Is there a driver or something that will allow univbe to work with my Diamond
Stealth 64?  So far, nothing works.  Same on Flight UInlimited.

The Univbe is supposed to work on my Trident video card, and it won't. Anybody
care to guess why?

I have a theory, but Papyrus refuses to confirm or deny it.  The author
of Univbe couldn't give me an answer why my ATI MACH64 wouldn't work with
ICR2 and univbe either.  Univbe 5.1a works with my video card and the
test results show improved frame rates.  However, I feel that Papyrus is
not utilizing the Univbe properly for some video cards.  If I load
univbe via ICR2 I get 2-3 frames per second.  If I load it outside of
ICR2, the program seems to ignore it completely.  I am hoping that
Papyrus is waiting for the 5.2 version of univbe (which was due out the
end of 1995), before they address this problem.  I am also hoping that
this delay in the release of 5.2 is why we have yet to see a patch for
some of the other bugs we have in ICR2.

My Mach64 won't work with it either- ATI BLOWS!. The game's problems
you report with ICR2 also occurs with Duke Nukem3D as well. DX-4/100, 16MB RAM,
and a coprocessed video card, I can't even get 320X400. Thanks ATI.

Seeing ATI seems to have trouble supporting anything except Windows
(See anything familiar there Gravis??) you just better get used to it. They're
supporting some sort of -hyper MPEG shit for Win95.....and they haven't done
the same for OS/2. Typical. Next time, a different card, I assure you.....

That's true. The problem is, that ATI changes the RAMDAC on their cards
every month, so that the drivers (including Univbe) have to be updated
every month. That's even true with Linux. So it's nothing to blame Papyrus
or Apogee from. Its F*** ATI

Why do you need it? I don't use UNIVBE for ANYTHING with my Mach64
card.

I play Nascar, ICR2, System Shock, Apache Longbow, Tie Fighter, all in
SVGA quite happily. I've also tried out EF2000 but it was too slow for
my tastes. But it worked happily too.

I have yet to try a game that doesn't like my ATI card. Haven't
downloaded DN3D yet tho'

I hate to burst your bubble, but I use an ATI Mach64 video card and also have
the beta release of Univbe 5.2 (called the Scitech Display Doctor).  Surprise!!
Nothing has changed.  My symptoms are exactly as you discribed.  I've given
up.

: Does anybody know if the univibe driver works with the Matrox Millenium video card?

And best of all, how to *disable* univbe driver loading?
I have S3-868 based video card, supported by univbe. But I have
also native S3 vesa 2.0 compliant driver. This s3vbe20 is somewhat
faster than SciTech's univbe.
Thus I would like to use native S3-vesa driver to increase frame rate
and add more details to svga-mode.

How do I know that this card-specific driver is faster? S3-928,
Vision-868, 864, 964 and 968 owners can test this easily with Duke3D.
Even 800x600 is playable in 800x600, easiest mode (less monsters, more
speed) in 486dx4-120! With univbe-drivers plain demo is awfully slowish
and jerking.

Go to your ICR2 directory and run UNCONFIG instead of letting the ICR2
setup configure things for you.  Select the correct ATI settings and
run ICR2 and see if that makes a difference.

I saw the same thing with the ICR2 demo but things worked OK for me
once I installed the real ICR2.

The reason that you want to use UNIVBE is that it is up to 5 times
faster in graphic drawing than the native VESA support built into the
ATI card.

Problems with UNIVBE driver:

It`s seems that UNIVBE driver don`t work too good with my
graphich card,infact,it looks like he don`t work at all.I mean,it works,I
could play Indy2 alright, but it seems that he don`t speed up my graphich, not
for a bit!

I`ve trayed Indy2 on fast system (P133,16 Mb) and I got (in SVGA with
full details) max. 17 FPS,I think it is too slow for P133, am I right?

My week spot could be a graphich card. I have Cirrus Logic PCI 5440,it
is alomst cheapest PCI card, but could that be a reason for that drastic
lack of perfomance in Indy2?

I`ve also heard that UNIVBE driver has the best resaults with S3
chipset, maybe that`s why he don`t work good with my CL?

Could somebody tell me something about it (not anything :),something usefull.

Thanks!

Hmm, the P133 doesn't seem to be the main problem...

As far as i know, it is so that the CL card is somewhat out of date, and yes, the
graphic card is THE most important thing to speed up you fps's.

A friend of mine upgraded from CL to a stealth64 (with the s3 trio) an the result
was very pleasing.

The UNIVBE provided with IC2 works fine with my ol' s3-805 board as well as it should
with most popular video boards.

Offcourse it would be wise to team up with a friend who ownes one and to try it out before
running to the shop... Just swap'em first!

Good Luck,

Jumbo.
