GP2: fuel ???

by Eric Engin » Thu, 12 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Today something very strange happened to me.
I drove at Monaco (using Keyboard) and managed pole at beginners level
(1' 24.980"). After having lapped 14 cars I went out of fuel in the mid
of the last lap (16). Since you cannot change the amount of fuel for the
race, I wonder how this could happen?

Anyone an idea what to do to prevent this situation in the future?
Eric.

Err, watch your fuel gauge and back off when things get low.

You can pit (press <Enter> to let them know first) even if you haven't
selected to do so at the beginning of the race.  You can also manually
configure the fuel load requirements in your setup so that you can set
it at the beginning of each race (my preferred method).

There is an option that alows you to decide on how many stops you want in the race.  This is how you change the fuel qty

Is this really an alternative considering that all other cars need no
fuel stop and you aren't even warned of fuel getting low (as in
qualifying, where you are automatically directed to the pits)?

Could somebody (preferably Robert) tell me how to do this? I only
managed to set the pit stop strategy just before the race.

I tried that, but it didn't prompt me before the race started, like I THOUGHT
it would.  Can you change that DURING a season(I had already run 3 races)?

At the start of the race there should be one or two more laps of fuel in
the car than there are laps in the race. You can *see* the ammount of
fuel remainding in terms of laps. Watch it. At some point in the race
you may notice that you are using fuel faster than 1lap per lap (ahem
wish they had used gallons or litres). If this happens you have a
choice, back off a bit and save fuel or pit and get more - preferrably
enough to finish the race.

You are warned.  There is a red light (the right side of the dash, the
2nd light from the top) that comes on when you have less than 2laps of
fuel remaining.

In the Race Options menu, set it to "Use Car Setup" and it will get
the strategy from the Car Setup Menu. I prefer to use the "Decide Pit
Stop Strategy at Race Start" option, and have never had a fuel
problem, even on full length races or anything less.

I'm not sure as I haven't tried running a championship season yet.

If you want to stop at 33% of the race for the first stop, then set it
to 35/6%. Then, when you start getting the red light, go to the PITs.
Youve managed to stop at 33% distance length :-)
you should indeed be able to put the fuel you want... and in liters,
or gallons.

No, I know what he is saying  and it annoys me too.

Whenever the length of a race is about 20% total distance, the default amount
of fuel isn't enough to get home.  Whether this problem is specific to
auto gear changing I don't know.

I think the computer just loads the car with 2 extra laps of fuel and this
isn't enough.  It isn't as if the fuel tank is too small as you are allowed to
do a one stop race with 100% distance.  You shouldn't have to pit when the other
cars don't have to.

I'm sorry I dont know how to solve the problem, except for dropping the
race distance back to a shorter distance.

I set my pit stop strategy before the start of each race and I would have
thought it a good idea to be able to set the amount of fuel in the tank then.

Oh well.

It must be either auto gears, or your driving style, because I have
run many 20% length races & never have had a fuel problem.  I almost
always have about 2laps worth of fuel left in the tank.

Hi,
following up with the problems of people having problems with fuel
on GP2 running at about 20% race distance ....  I would like to know how
do you set the amount of fuel before each race?? By default (at 20%) it
seems to add 2 extra laps worth of fuel - but does this apply to races
greater than 20%. I'm thinking of running the championship at 25%-30%
race distance - and i think the extra 2 laps of fuel will be
insufficient for that. SO, how do i set the fuel amount before the
race??
