Tried to post this a couple of weeks back but it bounced.  FYI, the Feb issue
of Motorsport, an English mag now on some newstands in the US, has a "test
drive" of Gurney's Eagle and a Lotus 49.  In another article, they have a
track report on everyone's favorite, the Nurburgring.  Well worth getting.

Also, "Thoroughbred and Classic Cars" (another UK mag, Feb issue), has a
report on driving a BMW 3.0CSL on the 'ring.  I had the pleasure of riding
with their lead driver on one of his laps that day.  Fortunately, I wasn't the
one in the Cosworth.

Lucky bastard. I got both those mags - I'm off to the ring this year. I
visited a couple of years ago but didn't have the guts to try the track. How
much has the ring changed from '67 / gpl ? Would a gpl ringmeister know what
to expect or is it like learning the ring again ?

Cheers , Bog.   PS wasn't the batmobile gorgeous?

Bog

If you know the ring on GPL you will be OK at the real Ring.
Go to www.hyperstim.com and click on LATEST NEWS 'Crooke drives the real
Nurburgring' and you can see comparision track shots from the***pit
between GPL and the way it is now.

Lotus quickest, Eagle prettiest, best sounding, and most forgiving[1]. So no
surprises there then...

[1] Although the Lotus is, apparently rather less intimidating than the
unforgiving beast we get in GPL...

Sorry, no scanner.  Others??

They did mention that both had more modern compound tires and while the Eagle
was on '67-type widths, the Lotus was using much wider '69 vintage width.

They were concilliatory in congratulating Gurney et al for being competitive
working on such a shoe-string budget against a seasoned Lotus and
deep-pocketed Ford.

Nice photo spread...

Err, thanks, I guess :-)

I know how you feel.  Took a bit of workup of the old courage to try it.  And
after each lap, I had to let the adrenalin die down.  Thinking each time,
"another lap?  No! Yes! No! ...Well, okay..."

I only had a few hours of GPL "ring practice before I left.  So I was not that
familiar.  Besides, how much do you really want to trust your memory
when it there is no "shift-R" on your body? :-)  Since running it, I've done
countless laps on it in GPL.  Maybe I'll have to give it another try.  Oh,
both Adenau and Pfanzgarten had me scared silly in that I'd embarass myself in
front of the locals.  But yes, you'll have a leg up by your running the sim.
And after 3 or so laps, you start remembering more.

The Batmobile was sweet.  So were the Ferrari 355 F1, 3 Elises, two Porsche
GT3's, Caterham, many tricked out Schnitzer BMW's, Cosworths, etc, etc.  It's
like being in a rolling museum.  Most passing my lowly 4-cyl A4...

ALL of the 1967 GP cars were, and still are, less than the beasts that GPL
would have us believe.  ALL of them....Brabham included.

I also thought the article rather unfair since it seemed to me that
the Lotus 49B they were using _should_ have had front wings attached.
It certainly seemed to having mounting points and in the picture with
Hill driving it it had front wings.

To remove them and then complain of chronic understeer seemed churlish.

Any more churlish than comparing a 67 Eagle with a winged car. The Lotus was
essentially the same car in 69 albeit with a few mods and the wings. The
article in question, in all fairness ,did state that the very cold
temperatures made it almost impossible to heat the tyres up and this
contributed to the understeer.

If the 49 was set up to comply with Formula Adelaide rules, or even the new
Thoroughbred rules, then wings are not allowed.
