PIII 550 (Katmai - it won't overclock much) on P3B-F, Matrox G400,
256Meg RAM - using D3D patch
I can practice GPL OK at most tracks, but soon as I add other cars on
track my fps drops to about 25, bends come up too slowly, I let off
the brakes, and then of course too quickly!

I've tried turning down graphics options, and dropped to 640x480 but
it doesn't help much. I've read posts that suggest some cpus are too
fast, so what is just right?
Thanks,

Hmmm, try a 3dfx card.
I use a P2 400 196 mg ram and a voodoo 3 2000 pci oc'ed to 166. (you can get
one for 50 bux)
I run GPL in 1024 x 768 w/19 cars, and get a solid 36 fps 95% of the time.
I would imagine on your system it should be a solid 36 fps ALL the time.
Try turning down the detail slider a bit as it only affects the cars drawn
ahead.

Have you upgraded GPL to 1.2 ? close some resources also to free up your
computer power..

It's probably your graphics card slowing you down. You should consider
replacing it with the best 3dfx, ATi Radion or NVidia based card you justify
spending the money on. I doubt you would see much improvement from upgrading
your CPU.

Alex.

I've driven GPL in D3D on a G400 (with Celeron 550) and it's fine - the fps
only dropped below 36 (to about 25) when on the start with a full grid.
That's in 1024 res with all details + effects on, 3d wheels all round and
Bruce's latest version of the Lotus.

Make sure you've got the GPL 1.2 patch and some reasonably recent G400
drivers. Use ctrl-alt-del to kill as many processes as you can before
starting GPL (but don't kill explorer or systray, you need them!). Turn off
FSAA too - it's pretty but steady fps is more important.

Cheers

Many thanks everyone for all that advice. It was the Ctrl-Alt-Del that
did it.
I didn't think I had anything eating resources but there must have
been, as I tried it anyway (because it has always irritated me in the
past when someone asks, you answer, and they ignore you because they
'know' thats not right!) and it worked!

Could be your 3D card.

Do you use the mirror patch? Brings a lot
Also decrease detail bias to about 30% (mine is uder the "s" of bias)

That mirror patch really helps. I love it.

Yes, but if recording for posterity note that although Ctrl-Alt-Del
made some improvement, the real benefit was just now when I re-read
all the readme's and realised I hadn't optimised core.ini for D3D. Now
I'm at 35 fps even at race start with everything maxed at 1024 x 768.
Good card, the G400!
