GPL # seems to decrease...

by Arto Wik » Tue, 01 May 2001 08:38:43

After the publication of N4 the number of GPL postings seems
to have decreased dramatically...

I kind of understand that, and I kind of do not understand that...

Even when I can take part to on-line N4, and my ZoneAlarmed PC
doesn't seem to allow me any GPL races - I have been able to
qualify in GPL (not well... :-) , but at least when I have clicked to
the starting grid, my PC has jammed - my racing love is GPL...

Is there any hope the clever gang will make a path to that??
Some "unofficial" patch? In the style of N4?
Dear Papy gang, please!

Can't you simply turn ZoneAlarm off?

Get rid of the silly firewall.  Why the heck do you need it anyway?
http://grc.com has directions for eliminating just about all common
intrusion methods in the shieldsup area.

I can run GPL with ZAPro without any Problems. You just need to
open the used GPL ports.

You'd be surprised how often people try to get access to your machine.
I often look over my ZoneAlarm logs & I see many attempts by others to
either FTP or Telnet into it.  Especially if one has a static IP, only a
fool would have their machine on without one.

It's just because much of the GPL traffic seems to have moved
into the Legends Central forums. I forget the url, though.

But then a firewall doesn't have much use anymore I think?
Isn't this the same as putting a lock on your door and leaving the
window wide open?

<snip!>

No. You only open specific ports (eg. 6969) for specific protocols (UDP)
for specific applications. A better simili would be lending a neighbor
the key to your shed. The only really secure system is locked away
somewhere (in an abandoned salt mine?) and turned off. And doesn't have
a harddisk. ;-)

modify your core.ini in order to run GPL in a window.
then start a multiplayer session and when zone alarm's pop-up windows
appears check the box "allow always" or something like that.
now you are ok,  you can run again GPL in full screen mode and it
won't freeze anymore.

Thanks for your advice:

But: I have been able to tell GPL this "allow always", I have been able
to take part to the practice, and even chat after that. GPL freezes,
when I try to get again to the track... Once I have even been sitting
on the starting grid... I just cannot understand, why GPL partly manages
to deal with ZA, and partly does not...

It depends on the system. Before I installed a Voodoo2 in my computer,
my TNT2 running OpenGL (pre d3d) worked all day long with ZoneAlarm.
When the Voodoo2 went in it stopped working and has not worked since
(even after the Voodoo2 and the TNT2 were replaced!). It locks up when
you try to exit the track. Sometimes before, but always when you try
top leave the track. I have since deleted ZoneAlarm and installed a
Linksys Cable/DSL Router. I would suggest getting a different firewall
or remembering to turn of ZoneAlarm when racing on Vroc (not as easy
to do I always forgot and well . . . )
