GF3Ti2 & GPL, doesn't seem faster, actually slower than Voodoo3???

by Brook Halvorso » Mon, 11 Mar 2002 15:28:36

Is this normal?  I had a Voodoo3 3000 and GPL was great, no probs, maybe
slightly slower FPS with 19ai at the start.  Upgraded to the GF3 so I could
play F12001, and GPL actually seems slower, I get about 12fps at the start
of a race (1024x768).  Shouldn't it be lightyears faster?  Should I be
running the OpenGL patch instead of D3D?

I'm using Athalon800 w/ AsusA7V m/board, PNY GF3Ti200 (I don't know which
driver, it's whichever one was on the Nvidia site yesterday), win98se.
Maybe this is normal, but I wouldn't think it should be???  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brook

To find out the driver version # there are a couple of ways.  clik on
start\settings\control panel.  THen choose system and clik on the Device
Manager tab.  Find the display adapter item and clik on that, then choose
properties and drivers and finally driver details.  The last 4 digits of the
number will be your driver version, i.e 2311 = 23.11 or 27.42 or 8.13.

Your processor is simply too slow to use all of the features of the new
card. Also, you probably have v sync enabled, which would destroy the speed
of the card.

GPL is very CPU intensive and you have a slow one by todays standards.  I assume you now run d3d
whereas b4 with your voodoo card you probably ran 3dfx.  d3d is also much more processor intensive.
The OpenGL patch is good, but at higher resolutions is screws up the menus so its almost unusable.
Your system is severely processor bound for playing GPL.

Vsync?  How do I adjust that?  Display properties?  Core.ini?

thanks

Wow, I can't believe I used to play on a pII266 with a herc thriller, and I
got better fps than I do now!  Says a lot for the rendition cards.  Too bad
they don't still make 'em.  Then again, I didn't have gigabytes of graphics
add-ons for GPL back then, and I was running 800x600.

So is a 3dfx card really less CPU intensive than a GF3?  Seems like as all
the hardware gets faster, it becomes less efficient, throwing more work to
other hardware.  I remeber reading in "four-wheel drift" that for most
systems, the Rendition-based boards were better than the 3dfx's because they
took on a whole lot more of the workload, freeing up the CPU.  And now
Nvidias are even more CPU intensive than the 3dfx's.  This puts me in an
awful spot, having to buy another processor and motherboard (and memory) for
my 16-month old system just so I can take advantage of my new video card.
Doesn't that seem a bit absurd?   I don't think it's worth it right now, I
keep on upgrading everything to make the game look better and better, but I
still SUCK!  I should stop finding ways to spend money on this sim, a
"potentially" low cost way to experience race driving, and start worrying
about finishing a race at Monza without crashing out.

thanks for the help :-)

Go to display properties. settings, advanced. One of the tabs will say
GeForce 3 ti200 (or something like that. Addition properties, Open GL, and
set vertical sync to off.

The point your missing here is that d3d is much more cpu intensive, rendition cards and later 3dfx
cards were less cpu intensive because of the way rendition and 3dfx(glide) work.  GF cards are great
for OpenGL, you would get higher fps in most all games with OpenGL than d3d with a GF card.
Unfortunately, the OPenGL patch for GPL, whiles its good its not up to modern standards like the
OpenGL stuff for N4/N2002.

I don't have GPL anymore, sold it on  a few years ago, but I seem to recall
that GPL was a glide game... so you'll be running it in D3D or OpenGL.
Unless you have a super fast CPU and the latest whiz bang graphics card...
it is never going to un as smooth as it would on a 3DFX card..... I'd like
to see how it runs on my Voodoo5 and 1.4ghz Athlon.

GPL would run flawless on your computer. I have a 1.3ghz T-Bird and USED
to have a Voodoo5 in it. Never a drop below 36fps anywhere, with
everything maxed and a few add-ons. With the nVidia, I still get 36fps
all over, but things don't run as smoothly. Lots of goofy things happen
at strange times. I'm thinking I need two computers, one for GPL and one
for redneck racin'.
