cable modem users info - MaxMTU setting, etc

by skott » Fri, 19 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Ive spent the last few hours lurking around the net, looking for
information about cable modems, specifically looking for recommended
registry settings (ie: MaxMTU, DefaultRcvWindow, etc) to increase

people getting much higher download speeds than I so I thought I would
try tweaking my registry settings to see what kind of performance
boost I could get. A good site I found was http://www.racesimcentral.net/
They have some patches and links to programs like EasyMTU, TweakDun
that will change your settings for you. Instead of having to backup my
registry and using their Generic Registry Patch for Windos 98, I chose
to use EasyMTU and implement a few of their "Recommended settings for
Windows 98" from within EasyMTU. I changed the MaxMTU to 1500,
DefaultTTL to 128, and DefaultRcvWindow="372300", rebooted and fired
up my browser. I tested the new settings on a 40mb download ad noticed
a HUGE improvement. I was getting about 660kbps after the changes from
my old regular speed of about 60-80kbps (on average) (depends on site
too. This was a demo download from download.com)
I believe the improvement has alot to do with the DefaultRcvWindow
value of 372300 because now my connection is requesting more data at a
given time. The only problem with this is the packet loss factor. With
a high  DefaultRcvWindow value, if a packet is lost, the packet size
is much larger (from what i have read). I havent tried an online race
yet with these registry settings and plan to once i am done here, but
I am assuming the DefaultRcvWindow value of 372300 may not be so good
for online racing. If i lose a packet it will be a large packet and
could makethings worse than the settings I had (which was win98
default)
A lower DefaultRcvWindow value will probably work better for online
***

I was wondering what kind of registry settings other cable modem
racers out there are using in order to improve their online racing
experience. What would the "best" settings for online racing to help
keep a more stable connection while reducing warps? anyone? :)

I will give my settings a try and see how it goes. I wasnt
disappointed with the default win98 settings and my online connection
while racing, but thought I would try to Improve it if i could.

Anyone out there mess with their registry settings (cable modem
users)?
Have you come across an excellent setting you can pass on to others?

BTW, check out this story "Get a Cable Modem......Go to Jail"

Also, check out the bandwidth speed test at:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
According to my test,my line speed is 1854.5 kbps or 227.3 kbytes/s
which is between the range of a T-1 to T-2 line. :/

I am also on cable, and have played with several registry tweaks.  As the
host of a N3 league, I have found that with the tweaks many of the guys were
experiencing more frequent clock zaps than before.  I think that your
suspicions are correct, in that larger packets are bad for on line ***.
I have recently gone back to the default settings, and the connections are
more stable in the league races.

You may get faster downloads with the tweaks, but if you are hosting on-line
races, it's not worth the problems it creates.

For GPL, MaxMTU and DefaultRcvWindow are not important. The largest packet
GPL will send is 340 bytes or so (130 bytes with the usual core.ini
settings). This is less than the mininum for MaxMTU. And DefaultRcvWindow is
part of TCP, but GPL uses UDP.

Do u use win98 Kevin? MTUSpeed requirements doesnt have win98 listed
and ive had problems with programs that are not win98 compatible in
the past.
Is the win95 compatible version ok for win98?
U use those settings for racing? how is it?
Rwin of 10? thats pretty low, arent your download speeds really slow
with a value of 10? mine would be

Funny thing is.  I've run this a half a dozen times now and the only time I've
been "off the chart" was the first time.

I'm consistently around 2500Kbps now.

I have tried my new settings a fair bit now with N3. Mostly on the
oscarSrv.
While these settings are great for fast downloads, it wasnt working
the best for online racing. MANY clock zaps and bad connection
messages. I went back to default settings and things cleared up.
I still think there is a setting which could speed up downloads while
still providing a good racing connection, its just a matter of finding
it. Someone else must have found a good setting by now, just wish they
would read this. :)
