Detail levels, set-ups

After some experimentation, I've finally settled on playing
NASCAR with car, background, and object textures on,
and everything else turned off. This is in SVGA mode
on a P90.

I was wondering, however, if anyone has done any
experimentation to find out how the frame rate is changed
by altering the number of cars in the race. Will dropping
from, for example, 38 cars to 20 cars yield any
appreciable difference in frame rate? What about the
number of cars drawn ahead? I'd really like to see more
than 10 (my current setting), but I'm unsure what kind of
hit I'll take.

Also, is there any FTP or WWW site with car set-ups for
each track? I must admit, I am more interested in the
driving aspects than the 'sim' aspects of NASCAR, and I'd
just like to have an 'ideal' set-up for each track that lets
me jump in and go :)

Thanks ahead of time for any advice.
