CART losing ABC and ESPN coverage?

by btgos » Sat, 21 Jul 2001 04:31:11

Has anyone else heard that CART will be losing it's television deal with ABC
and ESPN (basically the same companies). And that ABC is very interested in
showing the F1 series.
Sounds like it will be good news bad news for fans of high dollar open wheel
motorsport entertainment.

Rumor has it that CART will be switching over to a better deal offered by
CBS Sports, including longer telecasts, allowing both pre-race setup and
post-race interviews. About time! (Literally!)

So, it may end up being a good news/good news situation.

The best thing for CART is to drop ABC/ESPN, their coverage is pretty poor.  But
I wouldn't mind seeing F1 on ABC though, just becuase I don't need cable and
they will probally tape delay the rce so I don't have to get up at 5 in the
morning.

Not really.  Maybe they would actually put their reporting crews on
the scene rather than staring at tv sets in a Speedvision studio.

Lol! But didn't they do it more like this at one race last year: (not
an accurate quote): With 10 laps to go in the Michigan500 with more
lead changes that ever and Andretti and Montoya side by side we go
over to the thilling US open. Watch the finish on the sports news.

Oh ? This is new to me. If the F1 transmission goes over the two hour
timeslot here in Norway (and in Sweden) they happily cut podium
celebrations and press conference.

Luckily, I have the digital 7 channel coverage where even the one main
production channel is 10 times better than any other motorsport
coverage i've ever seen.

Thanks for the correct spelling :-)

In that case, I hope the US keeps it's Speedvision coverage.

In the US when F1 was on Fox they stuck to the time limit while showing
the race on tape, and often cut out the post race interview session.

I would hate for F1 to go to ABC and away from Speedvision where the
focus is motorsports and not Golf, etc.

God I hope so....ABC's coverage SUCKS. I hope it goes to someone who WANTS
it and will promote it.  If that's CBS, then great.

It's becoming more and more clear that ABC would rather tie itself to the
IRL.
