-Well, It's nice to see the CART folks getting some coverage.  However, I have
a "sneaky feeling" this is due to no NASCAR race this weekend.   But alas,
wait......I wonder if Mr. Rahal exerted any influence to the ESPN folks?

It's because of the NASCAR off day.  CART is getting its ass kicked
here in the states.  Sad really, as I can't even manage to sit through
an entire Winston Cup race these days.

and it's not because of the media in my opinion.

ESPN has given it more coverage than any other sport that I know of with a
similarly small audience. Plus they get all their races broadcast on network
TV for the most part, which I'm surer gets more penetration than TNN, I
would think.

I am actually very proud of the media for not dumping CART\IRL just because
it's had a bad decade. The Split of CART\IRL and the loss of talent of their
key race (I-500) have totally sabotaged any chance of a quick recovery of
American open wheel racing.

I have noticed increasing interest in F1 over the 2000 season, as more
Americans are getting good coverage. It may be time, within the next 10
years for American open wheel racing to combine with Formula 1. Perhaps an
additional "American Grand Prix" could be added in the states so that there
would be 4 north American racing, plus a south American one, and what is now
currently CART could become a F3000 division so that we could finally get
some good American drivers in F1. Plus if IRL were involved, perhaps full F1
participation in the 500 could be possible, with the American Grand Prix
being held the following week to minimize travel time, and put an emphasis
on test drivers, as the teams would only have a week with their drivers to
prepare. Just some not at all thought out thoughts.

If you're only referring to coverage of the RACE, I've seen CART races on TV
the same weekend of a Nascar race before...  This race was on ABC, Nascar is
usually on TNN ot CBS...

And the reason for the extended coverage is because ABC and ESPN are
both owned by the same mouse... er... company. :)
