Hey Indy fans,

I was watching the recaps of Indy bump day on ESPN / ESPN2 late this
afternoon and they did a story on the rookie, John Hollandsworth, Jr. and
showed him practicing in a Computer Indy simulator***pit complete with
***pit, wheel/pedals, drivers suit, and helmet. He made the comment that
racing on the Simulator for 2-3 hours made him better at making important
decisions in the long period. he did say that he couldn't feel the G-force
but said it helped tremendously !!! Score 1 for the real life validity /
importance  of Sim racing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The computer screen (Cockpit gauges) looked like a cross between ICR2/CART
and FIRS

Did anyone else see it ????

Yes.  It was CARTPR, with some sort of Thrustmaster
wheel.  It looked like it might have been the
Force GT.

And if he was really serious about it, he would have been using ICR2/CART
and NOT CPR.

Thanks for the tip -- I'll try to stop by Hollansworth's garage to
find out more details on this!

I'm presuming that Don was kidding about it being Fontana in CPR.  I
didn't see it, but my guess would be either ICR2/CART, or the late,
unlamented ABC Indy Racing sim -- both tracks offer the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway, and my guess is Hollansworth (the fastest-qualifying
Rookie this year) was trying to get a better feel for the Brickyard
without endangering the car, the walls, his checkbook, and his own
butt.

With the steering tweak utility I developed for the ABC Indy Racing
sim, plus a decent car setup, it is possible to run fast, realistic
laps.  It's no GPL, but depite what most people have said about the
game, ABC Indy Racing had a very good physics engine that was
handicapped by horrendous default setups and a miserable
variable-speed steering ratio that made it virtually unplayable right
out of the box.  Once you disarm the variable-speed steering with my
utility (which allows you to make it fully linear at all speeds), then
you can start to sort out the chassis.  When you're running at a
competitive speed -- and not doing anything stupid yourself -- the AI
is pretty decent, which left the lack of a real damage model as this
sims worst transgression.  It's not the greatest sim ever, but with
the steering properly tweaked and a good car setup under you, ABC Indy
Racing is much closer to ICR2 than it is to Andretti Racing or CPR.

Just my $0.02.

Quite a few Australian drivers use the excellent Hypersim***pits to race
GP2, Indycar 2 and several other sims as "concentration" practice!

It was definately CPR, but I was unable to see the track clearly.  But it
had high banks like Michigan or Fontana.

And the speakers he was using were the same Cambridge SoundWorks I just got
the other day.  I recognized the subwoofer just in front of his seat, and
the rear speakers on the tripod stands in the back.

But how many people get dressed up in driving suit and helmet for sim
practice like him?

It was CPR and I'm sure I saw those goofy lookin' palm trees that line the
backstraight at Fontana.

Hey, it's Disney...anything for TV ratings.

I hope the kid kicks ***Sunday.

If he was really serious about it, he'd be in CART and not IRL
