New TweakBios and Latency Timer!

by Ron » Tue, 01 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Just thought I would pass this info on for those with a "verite"
graphics card and no PCI Latency timer in their system bios.
The "newest" version of this program {Tweakbios version 1.50 beta 2}
seems to add specific support to video cards. This program supports
many different chipsets and if your system bios is lacking some of
those settings such as PCI Streaming, Memory timings, ect... you just
might luck out and gain access to them with this.

My system basics are:  MTech R528WP P166MMX
32meg Edo and Intergraph Reactor/Intense 3d card
Award Bios v4.51PG Rev. Hu

Here's just an example of what I have gained with this by enabling the
following settings in the latest version of Tweakbios.

Under Intel 430HX CPU - PCI Bridge
- enabled L2 Cache Modify Bit
- enabled PCI Streaming

Under Unknown Vendor VGA Display Adapter
- raised Latency Timer from 32 to 70

With these settings applied, I ran DMA test and get 22.5 fifo
and 98.2 DMA

Note, without running this utility and applying the above settings
which are not in my Award Bios v4.51, I only achive around 39 for a
dma score. I have noticed an increase in framerate in both ICR2 and N2
when running the rendition dma versions mainly being able to run a
full field drawn without any slowdown in video seems to be the most
visual difference.

I have not had a chance to update this info on my site but the link is
still up in the NEWS/INFO section at  http://www.racesimcentral.net/~lazer/
concerning this "Tweakbios" utility and also "Dmatest". Just follow
the headline dated 4/23/97 and the associated links to the above!

Hope this proves helpful,

Ron L.
