Screamin'3D - Will it eat my Stealth?

by Joeri Co » Mon, 12 May 1997 04:00:00

Hi, and thanks for reading.

I'm really thinking about getting myself a Screamin'3D Rendition card,
mainly for Indycar 2 3D and Nascar 2. However, I've heard terrible stories
in this group about VGA performance of the card.
Since I do not want to compromise too much GP2 performance, my question is:
is it possible to have both cards (Screamin'3D and Diamond Stealth 64) in
one machine and just plug the cable from the monitor in the card you wish
to use?
That way I would be able to use the Stealth for GP2 and use the Screamin'3D
for all the rest. In Windows 95 (which I do *not* use to play my sims) I
could just make two hardware-profiles: one with the Screamin'3D and one
with the Stealth 64 included.

Or is this just a bunch of strange thinking? Help me!

Thanks.

Probably not, as most machines will not respond to well to having two VGA
devices in them when booted up.

No, it won't work. I've tried it myself with the reactor card. But when
I plug the cable from my reactor port, into my old video card port,
nothing happens. I don't even get boot messages. I've tried everything I
can think of and still no luck.

While the VGA performance of the Rendition cards is sucky to say the
least.  The SVGA performance, while not the hottest, is not a slouch.
If you run GP2 in SVGA, you may only lose a small percentage of
performance with the Rendition.  If you can get the Sierra Screamin' 3D
and have the option to take it back go for it.  I think Intergraph still
has a money back offer on their card if you are not satisified.

AFAIK you can't have 2 active video cards in you machine.

I had a Lightspeed128 b4 purchasing the Creative Labs 3d Blaster.        At first
the vga speed was atrocious with the new card....UNTIL..I loaded the
"vtool" utility from Creatives web site. I'm sure there is a similar tool
for the other Rendition cards. Anyway, now my vga speeds are exactly the
same as the LS128.....your main concern should be what games are
supported....you may want the 3dfx as it is faster
and maybe has more games, I dunno. I got the Rendition because it was much
cheaper at the time and was supported by ICR2 and Nascar2 which are my
favorites...just MY opinion...no flames please....ps I am happy with my
purchase :)

Just something I have been reading about, but what PCI slots did you
have the respective cards in. If you haven't tried it, put the
Rendition board in slot 1 (check your MB manual, usually closest to
the power connectors) and you DS in slot 2 and see if you get the same
results......

Worth a try ;)
