GPL Video Idea

I had an idea for making a GPL video but I thought I'd ask some input first.
What I'd like to do is recreate the camera angles, movements and racing
sequences used in the movie _Grand_Prix_.  (I managed to buy a copy of Grand
Prix at a shop in Auckland a couple of years ago)

The camera work in that film is of such quality that it rivals cinema today.  It
conveys the sense of speed, the closeness to the edge and the raw power of the
cars perfectly.  As a base for developing a GPL video it seems ideal but I need
to know where I stand legally (and morally).

Is recreating sequences from an old movie using none of the actual footage an
infringement of any copyrights?  I intend to use my own soundtrack but I'm
concerned I'm stepping on the toes of the director.  I have a huge amount of
respect for Frankenheimer as I also loved Ronin and even from a non-legal
standpoint, I would be using his example as a mentor.  I would give appropriate
credit as well (perhaps inspired by or something)

Perhaps I should just try to recreate the camera angles and some of the shots,
but implement my own sequences.  I'd love to hear any comments (from those who
haven't killfiled me for my anti-american sentiments of a few months back), both
legally and from the point of view of respecting a great directors work.

no it's done frequently...if you REALLY get ambitious  you can put images
of US ras'ers in the video as well...heheh...just make sure I'm in the car
that's upside down...

You're probably not stepping on any toes by doing that, especially if you
aren't making any money from it, I imagine.  Heck, there are movie spoofs all
the time, and if anything, they just make the originals more popular.

I'd imagine Frankenheimer would take the reproduction as flattery if he ever
saw it.

 Go for it :0)

Pick up the current issue [April] of MotorSport - is has a story about the
making of Grand Prix with lot's of pictures on how the film was shot.

Also included is a 35mins film about Stewart and Clark.

Btw, did anyone knew that there is a new film about/from Le Mans in the
making...?
According to Autosport.com, the DAMS team havs been awarded 2 invitational
spots (One Panoz LMP1 Roadster 'S' and one Lola-Judd B98/10) to this years
race in order to carry out the filming of a new Le Mans movie by Hollywood
director Luc Besson.

[..... 5 minutes later....]

Did some more digging and it seems like what I've been waiting for for a
long time is destend to happen - a film about the comic strip characther
'Michel Valliant'...

From the Guardian:

"Besson adapts comic F1 hero"

Guardian Unlimited staff
Thursday February 28, 2002

"Luc Besson's next project will be a movie version of a comic book about a
hellraising Formula 1 racing driver, reports the US website Ain't It Cool
News.
The man who wrote Taxi and The Fifth Element is writing and producing the
story of Michel Valliant, who has been setting the world of French comics on
fire since he first burnt onto the tracks in 1957.

Besson is reportedly attempting to team up with a French racing team to get
real footage from the Le Mans 24-hour race.
The third movie in the Taxi trilogy is set to appear on French screens in
the autumn, with Valliant hitting the starting line in 2003. Alexandre
Ciolek will share writing duties."

This make more sense now:  (from the official entry list at www.lemans.org):

DAMS / F     LM P 900        LEADER
DAMS / F     LM P 900        VAILLANTE

YOU DON'T KNOW WHO IS MICHEL VAILLANT??????????????????????????

(yes, I was shouting here indeed hehe)

He's like, my hero.  Or more, the hero of any little kid who grew up
watching motorsports and read BD's. The guy has won everything, he's the
best driver in the history of motorsport <wink> ;-)  Anyway, there was
already a movie about him, back in the 60's.  F3 driver Henry Grandsire took
the role of Michel Vaillant.

Actually from a legal point-of-view a "spoof" is normally upon a character
or event in a movie.

Camera positions or manoeuvres are not intellectual events or properties
that are copyrighted by the director or the creator of a movie (except if
it's a "process" such as steadycam).  But then again, it's for the use of
the process and the mechanics that it is copyrighted.  Anybody can do them,
without a single problem in any movie they want.  So, yes, you can copy
directly some great cinematography movements from Kubrick, Scorsese,
Truffaut, Eisenstein, Spielberg, etc... and in this case, Frankenheimer in
any home movies that you create :)

Think of the release last year of the remake of Psycho.  They claimed
every shot(the camera placement and angles) was exactly the same as
Hitchcocks, and they didn't change even the scenes..  So if they can use a
movie almost exactly for it's full length, you'll probably find you are in
clear sailing.  The music industry could try and poop on you, but if you are
using original music even they can't whine.

ps...there is a Version of the Titanic disaster that was made about 40 years
ago...NOT the Clifton Webb version...but after seeing the modern Titanic,
and then seeing the other version on the Tube, I could clearly see where
James Cameron lifted most of his movie from.  Scene after scene was a remake
of that older show...Cameron did throw in Leo & Cate but the rest of HIS
movie was actually already done before...

Can't buy it? whaddya mean - can't buy it?!?!?  :-)
Seriously - every GPL loer should get hold of atleast one copy of this
mag...  (you'll be ***ed once you get it :-)  It can be bought at good
magazine outlets all over the world.

Yes it's a magazine - and if your into [GPL-type/historic] racing - it's
*the* magazine.  A 12 issue subscription cost about 40 or so I think - it's
*well* worth it.

Aso - yes the film is included with the magazine,  they usually ship
[atleast] one each year...  last one I got was one featuring Audis rally
history and the old Auto Unions of the 30's....  Was fun to see the V16 (or
was it W16?) "Audi" set a record at Avus :-)

Other titles have been films like  "Jagaur at Le Mans" (featuring Hawthorne
doing a lap of the track - while commentating! That must have been the some
of the first in-car footage ever made at the track..  This was in 1955 I
think and Hawthorne did a lap on friday - while the "track" was still open
to the public!  The thing was, he didn't just drive the track - he raced it!
Passing cars and other pedestrians as he went along!

 :-)

The only thing I really regret about Motorsport magazine is that I didnt
start subscribing to it sooner - say 30 years ago!

As for the images - I'll see what I can do :-)

Is it possible for a Yank to get this magazine with video, or is it a
subscriber only thing?  I assume your video is PAL.  I'd need NTSC.
