SCGT:Frustrations

by GregM8 » Sun, 30 May 1999 04:00:00

While SCGT is very ***ing, and I love the playability, there are some
aspects of the game I find very frustrating and was wondering if others have the
same experiences and maybe some solution I am not aware of.  Nit picky yes, but
that doesn't ease my frustration.
    Here they are:

1.) No matter how much I have tried to save fuel, (short shifting, easy on
throttle) I still run out of fuel on the last lap. For me this takes away a big
part of the realism. Fuel saving strategies play a big part in racing. In ICRII,
I derive great satisfaction in being able to win a race because I had to pit
fewer times than the AI due to good fuel managment.

2.) OK, so I know the fuel managment strategy doesn't work. New strategy.
Get a huge lead, get in and out of the pits either before the AI pass me or be
close behind to repass them when they pit. Nope. The M3 in second place passes
me while I am in the pits and has a 1/2 to 3/4's of a lap lead on me when I come
out. Hmmm, should still be able to pass him when he pits, no problem. Wrong. He
never pits and wins by 3-4 seconds. Arrrrgggg.

3.) New strategy. Put in less fuel to make for a quicker pit stop. I finally
figured out what auto pit is for. While your cruising to your pit stall you can
adjust what pit services you want done. Pretty lame though. You cannot pause the
game and adjust what you want done. This forces me to race through the menu to
make the adjustments and god forbid if I forget to arrow back down to DONE and
hit enter.

4.) This one has to do with the screen settings when you start. One has been
fixed with the patch. (no more f4, f4) Why doesn't it save your settings instead
of having to change settings EVERY time. I don't have a fast computer (pII 166,
Voodoo2) so I have to turn off the backgrounds and bi-linear filtering to get
decent framerates. It becomes a ROYAL pain when I am working on a set-up for a
particular race to have to change these damn settings every time I start.

5.) Last one. Small one common to most new sims. Dumb AI. I use the advanced
options editor but that doesn't solve this one. Two laps to go. Second place on
my tail. Zip by a lapped car and then have the lapper punt me into the weeds on
the next corner. So much for 1st plce money and points in that race.

    That's it. Done venting.
That done, I must say that except for these nit-picks, I love this game.
It's the only way I can get my fix for competition until I can get an upgrade so
I can get decent frame rates in GPL.
