Okay, that is very understandable, but can you at least make it possible
to obtain the package via "real" ftp as opposed to the pseudo-ftp you
are providing?

Speaking about accessing Sim Racing News....I'm having a lot of trouble indeed!
John, did anyone ever report about problems using Netscape Navigator 2.0 ? As
soon as I leave the "frontpage", my browser crashes (forcing me to REBOOT my
PC!!!!)

Did you know about this problem and if so, does the new Netscape 3.0 solve this?

Greetings and keep up the great work (I heard from others that it's great :)  )

"At least" makes it sound dead easy, but actually we need to look at
setting up an FTP server, costs and so on. We don't exactly get paid for
this, and I don't mind giving up my time, but I draw the line at my
money.

I noted from your e-mail that FTP was something some people wanted, and
I'm looking into it - can't say fairer than that ;)

Cheers Michael!

I dont want to play the smart guy but the only thing you need to do is
add a line like 'return to main menu' below your articles and I think
you can use all your .html documents for both versions.....just a
little idea. Anyway i'm not complaining since i use a frame-capable
browser. :)

Nope, can't be any fairer than that.  Thanks.  Now if we can only take
up a collection...  Or maybe someone out there has some spare space they
can donate to an excellent cause and provide SRN some free ftp space.

Any offers?

Wow, I've never heard about that before. I use Netscape 2 (testing) and
Netscape Atlas Gold (design) and both of them are fine. When you leave
the frontpage the first thing which loads is the page initialising the
frames, so I guess it must be the frames which are crashing your browser
- perhaps it needs reinstalled?

Try accessing these URLs and see if it crashes, if not, it must be the
frames command.

http://sneezy.dcn.ed.ac.uk/simnews/96jun/framtest.htm
http://sneezy.dcn.ed.ac.uk/simnews/96jun/welframe.htm

BTW, if the frames doesn't work you can navigate the mag without frames
using the "framtest" page - it just won't look very nice! I hope that
helps.

Cheers!
John

PS - Follow ups complaining about using frames will be ignored ;)

It's not a problem of space, we have several hundred Mb free. We just
need to track down some FTP server software and install it on our server
(NT based). I'll not have time to look at it until this weekend
probably, but I'll see what I can do.

Cheers!

Yes, but a browser which is sad enough that it can't handle frames, well
it tends to ***on tables, forms, anything "new". That means we need
to go and reformat everything otherwise it looks crap. If people wan
"non-frames", they can download the FTP versions and look at them
offline by loading each HTM file individually. It's a bit of a hassle,
and it would be much easier just to download Netscape 2 or get it off a
coverdisk, but it's infinitely preferable to me giving (even) more of my
free time. I don't grudge it, and I enjoy doing Sim Racing News, but I
don't want to make it more work that it already is.

Cheers!

Hey, I've got an even better idea. Don't use frames at all and only
write one version for everyone! Frames are bad (and yes, I do have a
frame capable browser).

ObSimulator: I still remember when I first saw Pole Position in the
arcades and was completely blown away by it.

No it doesn't.

I appreciate the service, but when you make viewing the _information_
difficult for the user in expense of a _little_ effort on your part
you're on the wrong track.

And it is not easy to download Netscape v2.0 over slow connections
and not easy at all, if you happen to have a platform that Netscape
doesn't suppport at all.

Would you like that on a silver platter, sir??  What the hell...  It would
just exhaust you to the point of unconsciousness to download v2.0, wouldn't
it?  What a joke.  People give up their free time to try to do things for
other people, and this is what jerks like you say.  Just stop you're whining
and download netscape.

Oh yes it does... etc

I don't mean to be rude, but a _little_ is a huge understatement. Sim
Racing News takes a _LOT_ of time, and I have a life as well you know :)

I'd like to help, but if people want to look with non-frames browsers
they can access the magazine using .../simnews/MONTH/framtest.htm
instead of .../simnews/MONTH/index.htm

Honestly Tero, if I could afford the time to make a non-frames version I
would do that. We want SRN to be all things to all people, but time just
doesn't allow that. We're doing what we can...

Cheers!

Sounds like a personal problem.

If you don't like it, why don't you go get your sim news elsewhere.
John graciously produces the best source of sim news anywhere on the net.  It
really bothers me that some ***s feel a need to whine about the proper use
of a good technology.

Keep up the GREAT work John!!

Couldn't agree more.  John does a fantastic job with SRN (can't wait for the
July edition).  It is important to remember that John and the rest of the
SRN team do not HAVE to produce the excellent online mag that they put
together every month.  It is a shame that some people do have trouble viewing
it, but please do not complain about it as if the SRN team have some huge
obligation to please each and every possible type of internet user.  John
already puts vast amounts of time and effort into the mag each month and it
is not fair to expect that he work even harder to satisfy the few people who
do not have a frames capable browser, or are not prepared to try to get one.

BTW I happily downloaded Netscape 2.0 to view SRN each month.

Keep up the great work,
Mark.

John,

I looked at your SRN site last night for the first time.  I've just
started playing ICR2 and the track guides really helped me in Cleveland.
Unfortunately all I have to play with is an F15 Eagle joystick.  But
after about an hour of practicing my time is down to 1:11:xx.  I know
this isn't very good.  But its better than before.

I can actually stay on the track now.  I know my times will continue to
go down.  One day when I can afford it I'll buy one of those wheel/pedal
combos like you rich guys...:)  But I must say that I'm very impressed
and pleased with the job you and your crew have done.  Thanx for a great
site.

As-Salaam-Alaikum,

Michael Muhammad
