I think CPR has awesome potential... If you're running on a fast machine and
don't do anything too wild, like deliberately wrecking or allowing
computer-controlled cars on the track <g>, the sim looks great (except for the
gamma problems), it "feels" right, and it gives THE best sensation of speed of
any racing sim! It reminds me of the driver-perspective views I saw in an
IMAX presentation of Indycar Racing - scary stuff!
That said, a lot of things are pretty whacked in the game... I showed this to
my cousin and younger brother over the holiday and tried to explain the
difference between a sim and a Nintendo game. Nevertheless, they spun the car
around and started driving backwards around the track. No matter how hard you
try, you lose the wings, wheels, and nose...that's it, if I recall. Sometimes
the car would pirouette up into the air and seem to hang from its nose as if
caught in a tornado, spinning and spinning. Even my 14-year old cousin said,
"That's supposed to be realistic physics?" Oww!
I'm not into Destruction Derby so this stuff didn't bother me too much...
What did disturb me quite a bit was that oftentimes they would hit the
computer cars head-on and come to a dead stop, nose to nose. The computer
cars would make no attempt to reverse out of the situation or go around, but
rather would try to drive straight through the player car. I watched in
disbelief as several AI-controlled cars literally smoked their tires trying to
do this! Combined with the number of times I've been hit while sitting on the
side of the track when a simple swerve would have avoided an incident, I'm
inclined to believe that the AI simply ignores the player. I haven't done a
lot of driving in heavy traffic, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that
the computer knows I'm even on the track!
