I think we should discourage this kind of posting on r.a.s.

It's not a place for public announcement but a "Newsgroup", to exchange
news, ask question and write opinions. If people do this each day.. who
knows how it could look.

For future references, to post IP of GPL server races...

I see nothing AT ALL wrong with trying to find people to race GPL with on
this newsgroup.....I mean most of us on this NG have the game, so this is
the ideal place to look for friends to race with.

Get off of your "VROC Pedestal" Francois.

To answer you 2...  It's not that Im against people who want to race
online.. but this is not just the place for it... The same thing happened in
the comp.sys.* games hierarchy.  Everytime new games appeared on the market
(FPS mostly...) people starting doing that and clustered and engorged the
whole newsgroup. It's a well known fact, and I don't want this really to
happen here...

I didn't really "flamed him" if you re-read the posting. I just wanted to
request an addition to the r.a.s. FAQ...  I "asked", "requested", nothing
really official or so.. just an opinion, take it as this...

And I really don't see why you think Im on a "VROC Pedestal"....   It's a
great program, and I wish that people would come there (and they do. there
was an incredible amount of people there this night, and it's just the
opening !).

I agree. Alison and I did not create VROC to replace other people we did
because we wanted to create a place where GPL owners can easily find others
to race with, find a server with a good ping and find a server with a
certain number of people to race with. We create VROC as an additional place
to find racers not to replace and squash out others who want to host
servers.

Thanks
John

Of course that implies that both the poster and the reader have better
news feeds! ;-)

Also D.B.'s Grand Prix Legends Page has a feature called The Grandstand
- Chat Room and Online-Race Board, where people can "quickly" post
information about making a race available.  At least with such services
as VROC and The Grandstand, one is inusred of timely "announcements"
being seen by all insterested parties.

The Grandstand

While I have everyone's attention, I would like to thank the countless
individuals who have gone out of their way to enrich the experience of
Grand Prix Legends.  First I guess we have to thank the Papyrus Design
Group and the bevy of beta testers (who have been more than helpful here
in r.a.s. and especially Alison Hine with her excellent GPL FAQ's
<http://www.nh.ultranet.com/~alison/gpl/>).  Next all of the folks
who have taken the time and effort to maintain great webpages devoted
to this simulation.  Then there are those who have provided race servers
to for us to use and abuse (Tim and Todd in particular, since I have
used and abused their servers many times!).  Also let's not forget the
many helpful and educational posts here in r.a.s.

We've got a great community here...

Yeah, I highly recommend this.  I've gotten onto several races in D.B's
Chatroom and connected to others that were posted on the board.  Always
seems there are more here than on the #GPL IRC channel, but that is another
resource that can be used.  Haven't tried VROC yet, as I'm lazy and use the
IE 4.0 that was already installed on my PC - but I installed Netscape 4.04
and am now downloading the update to 4.07 to use VROC.  But I'll still
probably use DB's.

Yes, very much so.  I've also abused a goodly number of servers and have had
a blast, although I'm 10 sec. off a lot of these guys every lap.  Papyrus
has given us a lucious sim.  Yes, a few flaws here and there, we don't have
perfection yet, BUT, it is so far ahead of everything else in sheer feel I'm
pretty doggone happy :-)  And Alison's info has been invaluable, a terrific
resource.  Only bad thing about Papy is they made Allison BUY her GPL, she
shoulda gotten one of the first CD's they burned.  But I guess our accolades
will have to suffice :-)

Well that was what I had in mind when posting.. Of course, those people
always jump to conclusions too fast and flame without re-reading it.. Oh
well <g>.

I think I made my point. I just don't think it's a good idea to post "Hey
server at 333.333.33.33 presently !".   I don't want like all of you that
r.a.s. becomes such a place. There's "other" places where you will find the
same thing, and get more people to join you.  But for those people it was
hard to understand my message, and I understand somehow...
