F1RC Demo.... anyone else besides me not getting it to work?

Ok, so I've heard some critisisms about the demo: sound, controller setup,
etc... but, I assume everyone got it to at least start?

I d'led it off alt.binaries.games, unrar'd it, ran the self extractor and
fired it up...

Monitor "blinks" two times, two splash screens, a hint of a menu sound and
crash to desktop.

Voodoo2 SLI is supported according to the faq, as is my SB16... I'm pretty
much stumped as I haven't had anything not run *at all* on this machine
since owning it.

Complete specs:

PIII 450MHz, 128Mb RAM, 2xVoodoo2 (12MB) SLI, Win98SE, DirectX7.0a... DX7.0a
reference drivers for the V2's and latest drivers for SB16 (installed those
trying to get N4 demo to work). Faq says something about tripple buffering
needing to be enabled, but I can't find that setting for D3D. Tried both
ways on triple buffering for Glide, but that made no difference.

Guess I'd be hard pressed to get support for a leaked demo, so any ideas?

Thanks,

Jan.

I doubt this is the solution, but where is your .exe located? I had to move
mine from the bin folder to the main directory.

Tried that David, but no effect. Although according to crash.log, the
"access violation" occurs at a different address then.

Dud download maybe? -Neither WinRAR or the self-extractor report errors
though.

This refers to the in game menu setting - which is enabled by default. Which
of course you cannot even get to :-(

You could try deleting the Save\Configs\Video.cfg file just in case.

Clutching at straws but have you plenty of disk space?

Other than that you might try removing one of the V2s if you want the
hassle...

Ah, right.

This file isn't even being generated. Maybe it's the limited hardware D3D
capability of my 2D card that's messing automatic detection up again. Having
to run VP3 in software mode because of that too. Guess I'm goiong to have to
cave in and do that interim upgrade before WSC.

oh... about 18Gigs free at the moment. <g>

I could do without that particular hassle, but there is always the option of
disabling sli. Maybe not exactly the same, but I'll try it. Hang on..... no
joy. <sigh> ((c) Eldred 2000-2001 <g>).

I'll have to chuck out one of the V2's to use the slot for a video capture
card in the near future anyway, so if there's no official demo by then I'll
give it a shot... thanks.

How goes the kid in GPL nowadays, BTW?
