It's only that slow in VGA ModeX.  VESA speeds about the same as the
Matrox and ET-6000 cards.

I have an Intergraph Reactor card that replaced my Matrox Millenium
2MB card. While what you say is true in standard VGA mode (320x200),
my testing shows the Reactor to be equal to or faster than the Matrox
in VESA SVGA modes. Most of the games I play, I play in VESA anyways,
so it was not a terrible loss for me YMMV.

And the Matrox can't touch the smoothness of Verite Tomb Raider or
Verite Descent II (26-35 FPS in 640x480 versus 18-20 with matrox at
same res) .
