Fingers crossed Don,  I've swapped the memory, and have run several
offline sessions of two different sims and am running an internet radio
while I type this and have windows media running, even tho the sound
conflicts with theradio...Stuff like this would usually have me resetting
like crazy ....soo....I think I'll be paying the shop a visit tomorrow and
replace the ram they sold me...
still...I've been here before...thinking I have solved my problems...thanks
for your input..

Dave...

On the Antec 350....what's the output over the combined +5v and 3.3v
circuits - it needs to be north of 200W....if its not....that's a strong
probable cause of lock ups.  The other problem, is your mobo may not be
putting the correct (or enough) power to the AGP port (typical ASUS
problem)......and the kind of lockups where you get something like "auto"
reboot of Windows....those are heat related.  You need tons of fans and
cooling to run AMD cpu's and Nvidia cards...and I mean tons of fans.  Stick
a cheap thermo ($10-bucks at most cooling sites) in your case.......check
your internal case temps and if they are above 35C....that's a real possible
source for all these random lockups you are getting.  I run four 80mm case
fans in all my race rigs....plus a 120mm blow-hole right over the CPU and
AGP port.  My case temps are still (a consistent) 25C when sim racing.  On
really hot days, I see my case temps edge over 30C....and I start getting
some lockups if I don't remove the case sides and blow air on them with
floor fans.  So....what are your case temps there, my man?

I would say the odds that this is because of your new Nvidia card....are
about a million to one!  Stop bashing Nvidia....its making you look stupid -
IMHO.

When I was racing with you at SP on Sunday, you were warping badly all the
time.....not just occasionally.  I believe you had a bad connection to the
server.......that happens despite a perfect running rig....you know?  If you
are on cable or DSL.....have you optimized your TTL, RWIN and MTU settings?
If not...that would be a big source of the problems you had on Sunday.

IMHO, Win98SE is the best *** ops-sys still......though XP is catching up
quickly on all the "speed" tests I've seen on the net for *** rigs.  As a
general rule, when ever you change a primary piece of hardware....like a
video card....from one type to another (like you did going from 3dfx to
Nvidia)...it is not very wise to not install a fresh ops-sys.  If you did
not, you are asking for all these problems you are having...IMHO.

Dave, get your case temps cooled down, get your power supply up to adequate
(if its not) levels, change the mobo to a modern board (not ASUS) and
reinstall Win98SE from scratch with ACPI turned off......and I bet
you....you never lock up again.  That's about 4 hours worth of work if you
know what you are doing....if not, take it to a shop and have it done
professionally.

As much as you sim race, Dave....its hard to believe you think you can do
all this tech stuff on your own.  I've known you in here....for what,
two-plus years now.  I can not recall ever coming into RAS
practically....and not seen "hardware problems" posts from "Dave
Henry"....your like a "fixture of RAS" in that regard......lol....  If I'd
had all the problems you've had over these last two years....I'd have shot
myself or jumped out of a 3rd story window long ago!

I've seen guys like you in SCCA club racing many times.  They spend the
entire race weekend with their head up the ***of their race cars, covered
in grease and rarely make it to pre-grid on time and in a relaxed
"ready-to-race" state of mind.  They take the green, blow up or crash on the
3rd or 4th lap....then *** about some new part they installed (minutes
before the race) being at fault.  On top of that, they usually are running
some English-made race car (Sprite, Austin Healy, Triumph)....patched
together with coat hangers and *** because the guys running Toyota's have
a "cake walk" all weekend long, usually sit on the pole, finish every
race.....and don't bring as much as a screwdriver to the track with them
(because its never needed).  Any of you guys who have run SCCA Club racing
before.......know exactly what I'm talking about.

Okay, that's the end of my "Dave Henrie banging" for the day.....lol.....

"Tom Pabst"..and don't bring as much as a screwdriver to the track with them
   Yup  that's me!!
case is cool because I have the side open and a 12inch desktop fan blowing
into it... (lowtech)  I have had better luck swapping my memory stick for my
son's.  I didn't want to burn another AMD cpu so I had the shop install the
heatsink.(it's not good enuf) and the memory....Once "I" put my old crucial
stick in...so far at least...no lockups...
However...just to elaborate on the racing analogy...I'll suck EVEN if I
get to the track in a calm state of mind...;)

<major snip>

You know Tom, I've seen you talk down ASUS boards before, just curious,
I'd like to know how you've come to the conclusion that ASUS for some
reason seems to be one of the worst MoBo's around, at least I never see
you talk down any other brand

Any empirical data, I love to show off my vocabulary, to back up your
claims would be nice

Beers and cheers

Man, you keep putting your foot firmly in your mouth everytime you post.
Just because you type "lol" at the end of a sentence doesn't make it less of
an insult... it just points out how bad your sense of humor is. Your analogy
about the cars people drive at SCCA events is completely irrelevant or more
to the point mis-guided at best. I am very technically proficient when it
comes to computers and I have a home network with 5 computers on it. Two
have 3dfx based cards, one ATI, one Matrox, and one Nvidia... of all the
computer graphics cards I have owned over the years the 3dfx were the most
trouble free to set up and keep running extremely stable. We all know ATI's
driver track record (although it's improving) and the Matrox machine is
basically for 2d graphics manipulation and web browsing. The Nvidia
(granted, older GeForce2MX card) runs very well but the constant driver
updates to run different games is a PITA. Lets take your analogy and spin it
like this. Triumph (nVidia... read that fast and hard to keep running
reliably) buys Toyota (3dfx... read that fast and extremely reliable) and
forces everyone through market domination to run thier hardware. I think
that is a more accurate picture of how things are. I think you are way off
base in your assertions that Dave needs new hardware (new motherboard? come
on!) and a complete re-install just because he bought a new graphics card.
It makes you look equally stupid defending nVidia at every turn.

PS:  The fact that four of the five computers you have at home have
currently have 2 3dfx, 1 Matrox and 1 ATI video cards on them......tells me
you are not actually very technically proficient....or smart.  .....lol....

How's that for a "sense of humor?"
