Dave, I've never had a game relatedd lockup since replacing my Voodoo.  Something must not be quite
right.  Are you sure you got rid of all the remnants of the 3dfx voodoo drivers?

I'd bank that you've not properly removed Voodoo drivers before installing
you nVidia card.

3dfx drivers are hard to get rid of - a re install of windows is probably a
good idea

I also have had no lock-ups or any problems since kicking out my V5 and
repacing it with a GeForce 3 ti200...

I'm afraid you're going to have to bite the bullet and reinstall Windows,
Dave.  Win9x is prone to this sort of problem unlike 2K/XP.  NVidia bashing,
when the problems clearly aren't nVidia's fault, isn't going to win you any
friends.

Dave;
If you haven't got rid fo all the VooDoo stuff, you don't have to
re-install Windows, and 98 works just fine with the switch, it's what I
have.

Things to do, if not done:

-in "add/remove" programs, get rid of the 3dfx drivers.

-after that, using the "find" function from your start button, do a search
for 3dfx*.*, 3dfx.*, opengl*.*, and opengl.*  If/when you find something
with this, delete them.

-remove any folders, etc. left over on your hard drive that's showing in
Windows Explorer.

-re-install your Nvidia stuff.

That's all I did in my switch, and have never had a problem.

OK thanks for the hints..I'll keep digging,
The power supply is an Antec 350 watt.
I did find a folder with backup drivers I'll see if that effected things.

Although the power supply may be capable, your motherboard my not be. I
popped a GeForce 3 into my older computer and started experiencing odd
lock-ups. The technician told me that my motherboard (ASUS K7M) didn't
send enough power to the AGP slot to fully power up the capacitors on
the GeForce card. If I wait for ten minutes after turning the power on,
I can safely go, but if I try much before that, I get system lock-ups.

It might be worth checking with a reputable technician -- if you know
one.

Well it's an Asus, but the only techs around here are the kind that yank
out a piece and send it back to the factory for replacement...i.e.  wait 6
weeks to race again....

Dave, when you lock up, do you have to re-boot or does it somehow unlock
itself after a short time? Usually I imagine a lock up as something that
only a complete re-boot of the game (or system) will get you out of.
My screen freezes for a few seconds and I'm wondering if we are experiencing
something similiar but using different terms to describe it.

I get two lockups...the main one is the sound starts looping and the
screen freezes and I have to hit the reset button to get ANYTHING working
again.  Occaisionally I get a complete crash where the system(win98se) just
completely dies and my machine begins rebooting like I had just turned on
the power.

nope...two computers here, both with win98 and my son's friend has a
system here sometimes(the curse of cable--Half-lifers wanna be lowpingboys)
and he too has 98se.  Since I have several USB items...although they are not
all connected...doesn't se handle usb better than 98?

The 3 major causes of these type of lockups are bad ram and bad power supply
or heat when it's hardware related.

I'm pretty sure the memory is pc133 but I got it from a local shop so I'm
not too sure of the quality.  I'll swap out my son's crucial ram with mine
and see if that helps...(I was gonna do that last week and got burned out
before I managed to do that...)
