GPL - Consistency

Hi all,

Following several discussions recently about the difficulty in driving
GPL consistently, I thought you may like to see the following results
I got while testing.

This was a full 108 lap Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, from which I have
extracted my first 20 or so laptimes to give you an idea of what I am
able to do - others will undoubtedly do much better.

1:26.58 (A first lap tragedy, two spins!)
1:09.36
1:09.06
1:09.21
1:08.85
1:09.03
1:09.46
1:08.94
1:09.98 (Caught CC)
1:10.84 (Still following CC)
1:09.59 (Worked out best point and nailed him! Past we go)
1:08.98
1:08.38
1:08.81
1:09.61
1:08.28
1:08.67
1:09.39
1:15.64 (Caught CC and spun trying to pass)
1:08.12
1:08.14
etc, etc

As you can see it is perfectly possible to run very consistently and
still at good lap speeds. The laps dipping into mid 1:08s were when I
was pushing to catch a CC. It realy puts me back into the***pit of a
racecar, knowing I could turn a 1:07 if I pushed but having to balance
outright speed against the necessity of staying on the track. Every
risk, if done right, shows up as a few tenths saved, so courage is
rewarded. OTOH you don't know until one lap later, so do you take the
chance again :-)

As mentioned, this was the start of a full 108 lap GP, with full tanks
and driving Lotus.

Cheers!
John

PS - No, I didn't win. I wiped out in the loop on lap 65 due to
frutration and overdriving when failing to catch the leader :-(

May I add for those who aren't happy about the Alpha-version of GPL that
John had the possibility to tweak his setup how he liked it (since he has a
beta-version).

I know many people (like me) don't very like the setup, mainly for the
suspension settings, so I'm sure people will be happy and run consistent
laps when they will be able to make setups.

Btw, I wanted to say congratulations to Eric T. Busch who has become play
tester for Papyrus !

Hi John,

Nice post!

Are, in this version, the tire temps modelled? And, is it possible to
alter your setup? Did you?
If so, please explain the differences.

Thanks!

Remco

Thanks for that John! Can you enlighten us on how the modelling of
tyre wear/heat affects ones driving style in a race? Is there a
significant need for smoother driving because of these factors? Or is
this unfortunately a non disclosure deal :(

You guessed it - sorry :-(

It's nothing secret - all the info will be known after release. It's
just that things change, so I don't want to confuse things by
mentioning items which may be different or improved on release.

Cheers!

It is.

I did.

Things are constantly changing, so anything I said would be of no
value when the sim is released. I'm sure Alison will have some
excellent hints on her website soon after release, to say nothing of
the whole book being written by Doug Arnao and Steve Smith (plug,
plug) :-)

Cheers!
John
