You can't. Goodyear only brings one type of tyre to a Grand Prix these
days and there's no point having a wet race tyre since there ain't no
rain :(((

Can you, or anyone, comment on the frequency of rain in racing of this
type?
I've only seen one race in the rain, Belle Isle with the INdycars this
year was a wet one. Other than that, I've never seen a race run in the
rain. It seems to me that they wait for the sun to come out and/or
reschedule. Any comments on this?

For a few years now, Goodyear have only brought one compound to the race
so this is all you have. If you look on the "tyre and plank wear"
screen, you will see it is different at different circuits, but all cars
have the same.

No wets because no rain....

Cheers!

Hi Joe:

F1 races are conducted in the rain.

I believe Monaco was started wet and dried during the race.  This
contributed to only four drivers running at the end.  Wasn't there one
other wet race this year?

I remember being thrilled with the Schumacher/Hill duel in the rain at
Spa last year.  I believe Suzuka was also very wet.

The Indycar race here at Portland had several rain squalls.

Under severe rain I think a race might be stopped.

We don't ALL drive around in the desert, you know. : )

I guess I'm a wimp, I remember being helpless in World Circuit's rain
races.  I can live without them, but I agree, "real men, and women"
should be able to choose them.  And they should be part of the "Luck of
the draw" during a season.

What's the word on not being able to shift at Monaco between Loews and
the tunnel?  Has anybody duplicated the problem Renzo reported?

I'll start racing Tuesday, I hope.  If anybody sees it in Portland, Ore.
sooner, please post or email.

One of my best computer game experiences was driving a full
length race at Monaco in the rain, in F1GP, awesome. I barely
hung on to win on ACE level. I'm afraid that those days are
gone, for me anyway, as I can't catch the Amatuers in the
sunshine, so I'm NOT in a big hurry for the rain patch...hehe

But when you select "car setup", "advanced" then "inspect car" you get
the tyre type displayed on the screen.  I have noticed this to be 'C'
most of the time, but I once had it change to 'D' (don't know how.)

I too have seen the tire compound listed, but it is always
A in my case...maybe the designers meant to put in the
tire selection feature then they found out that there are
no different tires anymore in the real F1 racing.
In that case, if they had included tire selection they would
have been attacked for including such an "unrealistic"
feature. Seems we should be more concerned about the "set"
and not the "type".
It is important, I believe, to be careful over the entire
weekend of racing so that you do have enough tires to go
the distance on Race Day. What you see is what you get and
no more. So I tend to run one set into the ground during
practise and save the other for the two qualifiying days
and the race.

JEB, you need to get out more often ;).  The only time they reschedule
an F1 race is due to earthquake.  The only time IndyCar waits for
sunshine is if they are racing on ovals.  The Goodyear folks are working
on a rain tire for ovals.  But I don't think we'll ever see it for
open-wheel races.  Probably not even for NASCAR.

Well so far this year in Formula 1 there have been 3 wet races - Brazil,
Monaco, and Spain. Actually Schumacher put on an amazing show of car
control in Spain, was really terrific to watch him in action.

Although this is not common, usually there is at least one or two wet
races per season. I sure hope they will come out with a patch to allow wet
races.

Still awaiting the arrival of GP2 here in the New World (USA)

Cheers.

Always seems to be 'B' at Silverstone (at least for me - I think
Schumacher must be on softer ones :)).

Best wet weather performance I remember seeing was Alesi (Canada,
1993??) when he stayed out on slicks long after every one else had
changed. Phenomenal car control.

In Formula One, there was intermittent rain during this year's races at Brazil,
Nurburgring, and Monaco.  In IndyCar, aside from the race at Belle Isle that
you mentioned above, they also raced in the rain at Portland this year.

If there's rain during an oval race, the race will be stopped or delayed. On a
road course, the cars race in the rain unless the rain is REALLY, REALLY BAD;
then the race will be shortened or delayed.

> For a few years now, Goodyear have only brought one compound to the race

Well it depends alot on the circuit and the condition of the track,
generally Goodyear only takes one compound, but they do often take
at least two compounds. Especially at tracks which are either new
to Formula 1 (as Aida was in 94) or where theres little testing
carried out. So really you should be given a choice of at least
two compounds if the game is going to be 'realistic' :)

Well whoever said you only used wet weather tyres in the rain though,
at the British GP for the first friday practice session a number of
the teams (including the top teams) sent their cars out for a few
laps, on wet weather tyres.

Not because it was raining, infact the track wasnt even damp, the reason
was that the teams wanted to try and start to clean the track and try and
get a fix on track conditions, without using up any of the seven sets
of tyres they had for the weekend.

Has to be Senna at Donington '93.....sheer magic. Also Alesi's STUNNING
drive at Suzuka in '95. Until the track dried out and the Benneton was
able to establish superiority, Alesi was whopping 5-10 seconds a lap off
Schumacher - amazing.

Cheers!
