Red flags in racing sims...yes or no?

Has there ever been a sim where the red flag is displayed in the event of a
large crash.  In GP2 theres a sound file that says "the red flag is out, theyre
stopping the race" but never saw one used (and ive seen some bad crashes in
that sim).  Im almost positive N2 or N99 doesnt have it and i dont think CART
does either but what about GPL.  I never saw it but does it have one?  I really
think this would be an interresting feature to have in a sim (i know the idea
is to race) but red flags are part of racing.  I just feel it might add to the
realism somewhat.  A good example is the Trans-Am race at Long Beach just this
weekend.  At the start there was a total blockage of the track in the new turn
one "complex".  The race had to be red flagged.  Like i said i know the point
in a sim is to race and im sure we all hate riding around under yellow in N2/99
or CART; but its part of racing.  Red flags are part of the sport too and i
just think they should be represented in sims.

[red flag]

Definetely doesn't have one. I witnessed (and saved the replay) a
GP-length race in Monza where the AI bunched up at the 2nd Lesmo and
only two cars didn't retire. They just kept going and going.

I dont think it does, but GPL should have red flags, for all the first lap
pileups on VROC :)
If more than half the field crash out, auto red flag and restart.

Do you think if this became fact that you would ever have a finished race
on Vroc? ;0)

On second thoughts, we'd never get a race started :)

Red flags usually just come out after an accident when the track can't be made safe
quickly enough for when the field comes back around to the point of the incident.
This would only make sense in a sim if the sim  fully implemented a realistic way
of removing cars from the track.  In GPL, cars either just mysteriously vanish
after a time.  In GP2, the driver quickly hops out of the car and pushes it off
and/or an omnipresent crane hoists it off.  No sim has really made this very
realistic.

For playability, there is no need for the red flag, since the track can always be
cleared so quickly.  But for the immersion factor, it might be interesting for a
sim to add all these details.

Well, if a sim modeled debris and realistic cleanup rates, then a red
flag would be necessary.  *sigh*  Maybe someday...  :-)

    Chris,

While no one will deny that red flags are part of racing, their inclusion
in a sim wouldn't really serve any constructive purpose. As you have
said, yellow flags can be a real pain in the ***in N2/N99/ICR2. But at
least we can pit. I for one would rather not have any red flags, especially
in gpl.

Why not? Isn't red flagging races just part of racing, something that is
supposed to be simulated. Unless, of course, you're part of the crew who
things that things like retirements shouldn't happen to human players, just
AI?

Can be an important part. Remember the F1 at Monaco, where it started
chucking it down, and Senna (rain-meister) started catching Prost at a
rate of knots. Prost started calling for red-flag (waving at
officials, etc). Red flag came out, Prost won. If it had gone the
distance, I'm convinced Senna would have won.

The funny thing about that race was that if it had gone to full distance
and Prost finished second behind Senna, he would have got 6 points
instead of the 4.5 he got for a half-distance win - those extra 1.5
points would have given the championship at the end of the season.

So much for Clerk of the course Jacky Ickx favouring a Frenchman!

(Then again if it had full distance it probably would have finished
Bellof then Senna then Prost, but..... you get the idea)
