Well, I might as well add my experiences... I've had my Logitech
force-feedback wheel for probably about 9 months now, with no
problems. The steering column has "loosened up" significantly, but it
doesn't effect my performance (I just hope it doesn't get any worse).
By "loosening up" I mean there is a little play if I lift up on one
side and push down on the other. Hard to explain, but it's definitely
not "loose" in the precision.
About the "whirring motor"-- mine will sometimes emit a slight motor
noise when sitting there, but it's seems to be because the wheel is
slightly off-center and the autocentering is trying to correct it. I
move the wheel slightly towards center and it stops.
In all, it was one of my better purchases, which is ironic because I
didn't research it much at the time. I had seen the wheel in the
store, and it was the first USB wheel I'd seen so I picked it up. It
was my first (and only) force-feedback wheel.
