I've asked several questions the past few days, thanks to all who responded.
Last one (for awhile):  Given my AMD K-2 200/voodoo 1, and given that I can
only afford one part at a time, would I get more out of GPL getting an 8 mg
herc thriller now and live with the K-6 200 for awhile or should I upgrade to
K-6 350 or 400 now and live with the voodoo 1?  (I know the thriller is a lot
less money than the cpu)  Thanks again for all the help, maybe one day I can
repay by helping someone here.

To get the most out of GPL you need a fast CPU. I had a Pentium 233mmx and a
voodoo1 and changing to a voodoo2 didn't change a thing for me, however,
changing to a celeron 300a and overclocking it to 450 made a dramatic
improvement. I now run a full field with everything turned on and get 36fps
at 800/600. I can run 1024/768 at 36fps with a couple things turned off.

Well, I guess I responded to the previous post, but, IMHO, I am very
happy with my Thriller on a slower system like yours.

Feel free to e-mail me to talk more.

Ditto for me - had a 200MMX with voodoo1 and upgrading to a voodoo2 just
made the fps fluctuate wildly and made it harder to drive, then got the
300A and OC'd to 450 and its wonderful. Don't think an AMD 350 is enough
unless you can OC it a bit (fat chance). Get the Celeron - its a cheaper
option, even the PPGA ones.
Still need to turn some detail off when on VROC to see constant 800x600
36fps though :( maybe a USB modem would help (where r they?)

I'm not sure, but I think the Intel processors are much better at floating
point calcs than the AMD chips. When I went from a K6 233 to a Celeron 333a
the performance was far better than the clock speed increase might suggest.

CPU horsepower is the way to go in your case. If you have a good super
socket 7 board that allows 100MHz FSB, a K6-2 350 or 400 would be a
good investment. If you have an older board, a Celeron 300a and a new
board is the better choice for GPL, however. GPL performance depends a
lot on L2 cache speed and FPU performance. A K6-2 on a board with 1MB
of L2 cache at 100MHz FSB will be performing nicely, even though the
AMD FPU is not up to par with Intel's FPU in GPL. A Celeron, OTOH, has
a smaller L2 (128k) cache running at full CPU speed and a better FPU.
And it can be overclocked.
