NFS PU: Beating Dieter!

I've come to a screeching halt in the career mode at the mission where
I have to beat Dieter before he can retire.
He just up and runs away from me. The only time I can even get in
front of him is to try to scrape along the guardrail at that first
hairpin, then try to hold him off.

Is there a strategy to this? I'm using a manual trans, and right from
the start, Dieters 911 seems much faster than mine.
I've had to try a lot of the missions a few times before getting them,
but this one is tough for me!

Go slow through the hairpins and don't spin. You should be able to get a
couple seconds on him there. Besides that, it does seem that his car is
faster. It took a lot of tries. I could get ahead at the beginning and stay
ahead until near the end, then he would always pass me right at the end. I
found I had to actually block him by looking in the rearview mirror near the
end to stand any chance. You'll probably spin a few times when he hits you,
but keep trying. Eventually you'll get it right, and if you're really lucky
he'll spin and you'll be able to cruise into the finish.  Also, make sure
you're taking the fastest routes through the course. There's lots of
different ways, take the ones where you are fastest. Good luck.

I was lucky and got past it pretty fast (on my 2nd try), on the 1st try he
beat me by about 4/100ths of a sec.

What I did in the 2nd race was when he would get beside me, I would force
him into something.  In the 2nd race I forced him into the side of the
opening of the tunnel.  That pretty much gave me a big enough lead to win :)

I think I used a similar method -- does that mean we're ready for
NASCAR, Clif? <G>

This seems to be a flaw in the AI. I have been able to push other cars
about to pass by just slowly moving over to some obstacle and BAM! they
politely crash. They don't seem to have any foresight. Not surprising I
guess, but still an easy race technique when you can time it right
(requires a little luck)

This was definitely one of the more difficult missions.  You just need
to practice enough to be really smooth, consistent and fast through
the whole course.  Try to take late apexes and use the whole track
exiting the corners.  You have to get to the point where you can drive
the entire race error free.  If you spin or hit the wall you're toast;
you might as well give up and start over, unless you manage to take
Rolf with you :-)

Probably not, #3 has a bit more practice using this method :)

NFSPU is one game where you can really railride.  I think that is
about the only drawback I can see (other than the internet/multiplayer
confusion).  Sometimes I will make an aggressive mistake and end up
slamming a wall without much penalty... This fact alone may kill
multiplayer games for me, except maybe with trusted friends.  I have
learned that when you are playing strangers on the 'net, they'll
generally exploit any loopholes in the game to get an advantage.

BTW, I clipped Dieter on the second hairpin and sent him into a 360.
That was enough to beat him, even though he was only about a second
behind me at the finish line.  Hey, he said he wasn't going to hold
any punches, so I punched him first!

Much as I like this game ... I guess it just wouldn't be an EA game
without cheating. sigh
