GP2: Poor performance on ATI Mach 64...

by Berend Ozcer » Fri, 26 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Could somebody explain to me why GP2 rates the "ATI Graphics Pro Turbo
PCI (Mach 64)" at a video speed of 57? I am by no means an expert in the
PC arena of graphics cards, but it was my impression that a PCI based
Mach 64 should perform better than this?

Is there some configuration utility that will let me "unleash the power"
of the Mach 64, or is it hopeless? It is really sad that we have this
card in a P6...

Thanks,

Berend

That's interesting.  I am running GP2 on a p5-90 16 mb memory Mach64 PCI
card with 2meg memory and I get the following results:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 175
Video speed: 108

I don't know if it helps, but I using the new m64vbe vesa 2.00 when I
boot up.

here are my scores with a p90 /   mach64 2 meg dram
I use a 430 fx chipset in my motherboard. Windows 95 dos mode. 16 meg
memory, like that even matters.

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 175  :(
Video speed: 142  :D

I  tried it with and without the m64vbe.com  vesa driver and the video
speed is exactly the same (double checked it too) but it seems to me
that my processor usage is a bit lower with the m64vbe running, just
my opinion.

I get the following from my P133, 430HX chipset Triton II and 24mb
EDO:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 258
Video speed: 157

However, everything I hear confirms that I should get lots better, the
Mach 64 is not THAT good anymore....

Sounds terrible! I've got:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 193
Video speed: 218

with my Diamond Stealth DRAM. The Stealth's about 70, so it looks
like your cheapest upgrade option!

Hello,
Microprose have a techy e-mail feature at their web-site, which I
used. I get slow SVGA (just like everybody else) and I wanted them to
tell me what the problem was. I sent them my spec, which includes said
ATI card. They got back to after a couple of days (hurrah) telling me
that the video card was rubbish and that I should get a Matrox.
I am getting a Matrox ASAP
cheers,
Andrew

I also have a Mach64 card.  And after reading your post Microprose can keep
their damn game because it won't run very well on the 'garbage' that I have
for a video card.  Some of us use OS/2, Windows, etc. which ATI has excellant
(sp?) drivers for. While there are faster cards on the market, I haven't had
any problems at all with this card (unlike the Diamond Stealth 64 I used to
have...).  I'll stick with Need For Speed and ICR2 which do work good with ATI
cards. I'm not putting down Matrox here.  From what I hear the Millenium is a
very good card.  It sound like Microprose might not want to deal with the
speed issue so their solution is to tell the customer to buy a new video card.

I also have an ATI Mach64, but I don't think mine suffers much.  I will
admit that it is not the HOTTEST DOS card, but I do enjoy GP2 with my
ATI.  I also run in SVGA, but turn off almost everything and get around
19 projected fps.  Are you folks who are reporting low ATI numbers
running the "mergeon.exe" program?  I have heard mixed stories about
this jobby, but it is supposed to provide "burst mode" to the video
card.  Maybe that's why my GP2log video numbers are higher than most ATI
postings.

Just what exactly is the "mergeon.exe" program?

What's this mergeon.exe? I guess it's like ctpci.exe which did nothing
for me.

Wishing for a GP2/Matrox combo instead of my well supported ATI!
