has anyone ever found a way to open a .car file?
any help on this matter is greatly appriciated

You might want to right click the file and pick open.  There isn't much there
that you can use.  It will ID, etc.

The best utility I have found for opening car files to edit ratings and
import or export car paint schemes for editing is N2HQ by Dane Johnson.
This utility has many other useful function for working with N2 as
well.  There is also an ICR2HQ.
