I don't own a PS2 but I have played on one a few times.  As I recall the
buttons may be analogue but still have very little travel - do you find they
offer adequate analogue control for driving sims?

Yes. When I first got it I didn't think that it would be very accurate, but
it's quite intuitive to measure out just the right amount of power. It's
nowhere near as accurate as pedals, but since you don't want pedals then I
think it's about as good as you can get for a gamepad.

Go to your local gamestore and try it out for a bit. Pretend you want to buy
a PS2 and they'll let you play any game you want, so ask for a driving game
and just check the pad out.
