new ISP behind firewall

Guys,

There's a new offer over here in the UK of an unlimited free-call ISP. I
joined, but as always, there's a problem..can anyone help?
For a start, it uses proxy servers (firewall). Now, my first question is:
Just because the ISP set it up that way, do I have to keep that setting? At
the moment, the connection is incredibly poor, and I can't get any ping
other than 'bad!' in N3. Also, even though I set up outside of the
newsserver, I can't get to any of Jacob's newsgroups with it. I presume this
is related.
I still have my old ISP connection, just in case, but for financial
reasons, I'd like to work with this one, but I need help, and bad! I'm not
familiar at all with proxy stuff, never having had to deal with it before.
 Thanks.

Here's my not terribly helpful thoughts on this:

Is the ISP Callnet0800? Ezesurf (yuk)? BT Internet? X-Stream? (hmm... maybe
not X-Stream - you got through, for one thing.)

You could try asking about the connection on alt.internet.providers.uk.free
or aipu.0800 (assuming you can get to them). They're normally pretty
helpful with queries like that (they'll need to know a few details, though
- the name of the ISP for a start!)

Can't help you on the "Jacob's groups" section, as I don't even know what
they are (showing my ignorance there). I assume they're a non-Usenet
private set of groups, so I'll have to leave that one to those that are
members.

Thanks for the reply - it's Surf Unlimited from Cable Internet.
I'll check on those newsgroups, too, but "Jacob's Newsgroup" is
206.27.21.29, which has more specialised driving game detail (N3, GPL, DTR).
It's also accessible from www.bhmotorsports.com in the newsgroups section at
the top.

I am using Surf Unlimited as well.

Since originally installing the CD I rebuilt my machine & set up the DUN
connection manually - without any proxy settings.

Works fine.
