N4 Watkins Glen : HOW do you drive here ??

by Gill Bate » Mon, 03 Sep 2001 20:36:56

OK
I confess I am kinda of new to N4
but I am not new to sims.

but this Track REALLY try my  skill in N4
Tried various setup etc and even downloaded some
to try but I am still not getting to grip with it.

I am still jumping around and skidding all over the place
even with the hardest spring,.......
most difficult for me is somehow my braking seems to
induce some drifting , mostly to the left.
Just can;t get it to brake into a straight line........

any help is appreciated ..........

Did you try the "<fast>" setup that comes with the game?  That works
okay for me.  Regarding braking, it sounds like you need more front
brake bias.

Smmmoooootttthhh..  minimum everything on the input. Do you use a wheel?
then use atleast 60% linearity ( I use 85% w/ my TSW2). Never ever lock up
your tires entering a turn, they cant take it for more than a few laps. Last
league race I ran at WG (HGNS) i pitted on lap 30,  fixed league - fast
setup. Keep at it.

Jump in the car of one of the other cars, watch the gears and the braking
they do, this helped me alot, and again alot of wheel time and be smooth.

thanks guys for the encouragement

I tried putting more to the front but that only locks
up the brakes and reduce braking distance
Any case, any setup you can post ???

unfortunately I am still using my trusty MS sidewinder joystick
IT is still very solid after all these abuses for so many years....
makes me think  about getting the MS wheel
(Although I am MOST disinclined to buy thing MS )

how is the accuracy tracking of the TS wheel ???

If you mean the TSW2, it is excellent. One of the best wheels money can
buy.

The secret to taming the Glenn is to enter slow and exit fast.  I know you
have heard this before, but it is true.  One of the best ways to learn the
braking points and line around the track is to watch the replay that Papy
supplied with the game.  Go to Replays section and load the replay for the
Glenn.  I literaly watched the replay 20 times in a row to get a good handle
on the braking points and the line.  If you do that, you will find that the
set up you think is terrible, isn't so bad after all.  If you want to check
out a set up that may be suited to your style of driving, go to
www.torn8oalley.com The set ups also have replays of hot laps to show you
how the author ran their fastest lap.

Good luck and good racing,

Also race Guy Wilson or Chris Moses online a few times and
see just how badly you really can be... :)

I was in a race where someone ran an extremely fast lap (119 plus) on the
last lap of about 10 or 12 laps.  This guys was awesome (wish I could
remember his/her name to give credit here).  I rode with him in the for some
laps and man, what a thrill ride, ragged edge the whole time!

My lap times are handicapped since I use a digital joystick I have no option
but to use the default anti lock brakes that are used by default with
joysticks.  But, having said that, I have managed some hot laps that keep me
in the hunt for a top 5 finish.  Actually, I could opt for not using the
anti lock brakes if I wanted to use either the twist axis or forward/aft
axis of the joystick, but I find that I end up being a hazard to others
because of how twisting/pulling/pushing affects my steering.

N4 Watkins Glen : HOW do you drive here ??

Its actaully disgusting how fast Guy Wilson has become. I remember back a
time when Guy was trying to come to grips with GPL.  He was really wild and
spent a lot of time mowing the various lawns of foreign tracks around the
world.  Now I join a race that he is in and I get a real education on how to
race a Stock Car or a Formula 1 car.  It really shows how anyone can go fast
in either of these games.

and yes Guy if you read this I will openly admit that you can beat me now.

<snip>

I normally use a wheel, but try to keep in practice with the joystick
since I don't like taking my wheel to lan games.  What I do that seems
to work okay is to put the throttle on the joystick vertical axis and
the brakes on the joystick's throttle slider.  It's still a bit tricky,
but at least this allows for trail braking.  Having throttle and
steering on the stick can be a problem, but since you are steering as
much with the throttle as with the steering wheel anyway, it's not as
bad as it might sound.

T-Man I would also like to add the GuyW & ChrisM are both 2 really
nice guys and will help you in a heartbeat!! To me, they are true good
sim racers! Also Guy has a server up in 'WON' so just hop in or look
for GuyW in NY Lobby1! This dude is fast, clean & a extremely nice
bloke! Hell you might even see this old dude too!! hahaha :)

Well David to me, this is one hell of a nice dude and yup he kicks
azz with both the Nascar Tanks & the GPL F1s.. One thing I feel
is he is always willing to help & this is rare at times! Also Chris is
the same way!!
Hell I don't care if I win or lose as long as I am having fun racing
or learning "How to" get around these tracks via GuyW or Chris
& of course many many more online.. Isnt this what its all about
online anyway? :)

Yeow Haqsau, I thought racing with a wheel and paddles
for my gas/brake right on the wheel was tuff..lol :)

Thom:  with accolades like that, i would be honoured to have my friends give
me credit like that.  Bet you're no slouch either.  I will definitely check
out the WON site, have not done that since going to N4 from N3.  Actually,
did not realize that WON had an N4 server going.

I know what you mean though about fellow enthusiats who are willing to help.
If I can plug some guys I know, it would be David "Kessman" Kesterson, Gene
"Geneman" Casey, and the other originators of Torn8oAlley.com .  These guys
are awesome.  Anytime you want to stop by our server for some pick up races,
please do so.  Check out our site anytime, www.torn8oalley.com.
