N99 Qualifying setup ?

by Greg Gummerso » Thu, 04 Mar 1999 04:00:00

hi r.a.s.

I have been running N99 since it was released.   When I race (normally
45-65% lengths) I run strong on long runs.  However, I feel like Dale
Earnhardt every time I attempt to qualify ( sorry chevy guys ).

Is there a basic guideline to change a race setup for qualifying or should I
start with a fresh setup to get my speeds up ?

generally, I use lower air pressure in the tires so they warm a little
quicker, a bit lower 4th gear so I get more revs (the motor only has to last
a couple laps), and a bit "tighter" setup than race setup cause colder tires
tend to not grip as much.  That's what I do, your mileage may vary.

I shorted 4th a notch or two.
Tighten the car some by moving weight a little foward, and/or adding cross
weight.
I increase my shocks by about 5-10% all around, and add 2-3 psi to each
tire.
I start with my race setup, and do the above, saving it under a diff name to
identify it as a qual setup.

Hope this helps,

WHen qualifying in N99 you will want to increase the tire PSI's.  Check
out our setup guide at www.gamers.com under the racing section.  The
setup tweeks should be explained.

NOTE:  There is also a FREE DEMO now available to race online with other
real people.  Load up the TEN software on your CD and try out the FREE
racing now available on TEN.  The 2 FREE tracks available are ATLANTA
and WATKINS GLEN.

Just remember: in qual you only get the first 2 laps (3 laps on some
short tracks).  Tweak the Ace setup and run 3 laps.  Then Shift-R and do it
again.  I'd recommend at least 3-4 times with EACH setup.  Any more than 3
laps is a waste of effort with that setup.

3 laps is a waste of effort with that setup?  Wow.... I spend hours
tweeking my stuff trying to find that last little bit of speed.  Trying
to find that last little bit of speed and tire wear is where I find the
greatest sense of enjoyment.

You should also try out NROS.  TONs of FUN.  Couldn't get away with only
practicing 3 laps with each setup either IMHO.

Thanks for the info.  I think the three laps that Gunner was referring to
was basically to make sure I practice my qualifying setup with cold tires.
