GBS and TEN. or, GPL and NASCAR.. what else is there?

I've raced the NASCAR sim on TEN for over a year.  I quit TEN
because of personal interest conflicts.  I still long for the thrill of
racing side by side in an oval track, but like Road racing better/more.

GPL is the most fun I have ever had in my Sim racing career.  To
date, GPL on GSB is the best combination there ever has been in the Sim
racing world.  This is just my opinion, and I do respect the opinion of
other that say that TEN is better.  I guess the best way to say this
is...  GPL and GSB fit me best just as those that race TEN and NASCAR
where those two fit them best.

Either way..  I'd like to get some info, or insight, on racing other
race car Sim's.. such as...

Viper racing,
SCGT,
I don't know if there are other multi (more then 2 humans) player sims..

Where do you race them?  I would assume on a private server.  I
bought a copy of Viper racing, and have the first demo of SCGT.  SCGT I
was host for a race with one other human.  Has anyone raced with more
then one other human? If so, I'd like to as a couple questions and get
in at least one or two races.  Same with Viper racing.. I'd like to ask
a couple questions as well as get in one or two races.

So, If you belong to a racing series with more then one human racing
in real time.. Please email me so I can setup a host for a couple races
to see what I may be missing in them.

GBS and TEN. or, GPL and NASCAR.. what else is there?

by Scott B. Huste » Fri, 30 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hey Mike.

I have Viper Racing.  It was pretty cool for about a month... and then I got
board of it.  Its all fantasy tracks and although they are OK....
definitely not anything special.  I thought the physics were pretty good
though.  Its a fun diversion from time to time, but I havent fired it up in
well over a month now.

I havent bought SCGT yet.  I deleted the demo as well.   So far I have heard
mixed reviews but it seems like more people are a bit disappointed than are
pleased with the final outcome.

My next "big dream" sims hopes lie with Trans-Am Racing.   Im begging the
people involved with this sim to do it right!   All indications are that
they are... but who knows what the final product will bring.   Real physics
and multiplayer capabilities that are strong are what I look for first.

Then we need a CAN-AM reunion sim.   The Lotus, Shadows, etc, etc.  The
roars of those monsters are truly legendary.  I was too young to remember
the series,  however Ive seen the reunions and watched videos of the CAN-AM
series.  Awesome =)

Then of course is N3...  after Sierra/Papy gets done trying to milk us all
for N2000, N2000.5,  N2000.75,  N2001,  N2001.25, etc etc based on the N2
physics engine with "updates".

GPL of course is still King of the Hill in my book.  I can see this sim
being strong for another 1 - 2years before people even start "getting bored"
with it.  Heck.. it might be alot longer.

We are still using the "ancient" N2 over on TEN so GPL should have a much
longer life span.

Im not what you would call a "gamer".   The only "games" I have on my PC at
home are sim racing titles.  I might add SimCity 3000 or something like
that... but I dont own any FPS titles.  The last one I had was Dark Forces
=)

I don't have alot of time (work, wife, MBA classes, sleep) so the time I
have is devoted to sim racing only and G.T.S. Racing
(http://www.GTS-Racing.com).

GPL and N2 are my two sims of choice at this time.

Id like to see a new CART sim or F1 sim that really rocks.  Something that
compares to GPL with great multiplayer capabilities.

A company can put out the greatest physics engine and sim out there.
However, if it doesnt have multiplayer capability... Im just not
interested.  I have N99 and have used it twice!  I think maybe 45 minutes
total use time.   I havent run N2 offline in ages.

Its multiplayer or nothing =)

We all should be thankful that there are a great number of talented
individuals out there who provide us with items such as VROC, Spy Boy, GPaL,
etc.  Their contribution to our hobby is immeasurable.

As far as TEN being better than GPL or vice versa...   they are 2 totally
different beasts.   I love the close action of N2 on TEN and racing with 23
other drivers.  Nothing like banging doors like that.

However,  GPL is a huge challenge and its just awesome fun because you
cannot master everything in it.   Not that I have mastered N2 by any stretch
of the imagination,  but GPL is just a different beast.  TEN offers a bit
more structure with rankings, greater number of organized leagues, etc.

IMHO - They are both fantastic and I enjoy participating in them both.  Im
glad I dont have to choose one over the other.

Mike,

Just like GPL, Viper and SCGT run on listen servers, i.e. users who decide
to host a multiplayer race (at least as soon as GPL1.1 comes out GPL will
have a dedicated server version).  So basically its like pre-VROC days for
GPL in regards to Viper and SCGT.  If you are running a league and have a
good host you can use then you dont need a VROC equivalent just supply all
drivers with the host's IP addy.  However, be warned that SCGT is not
supposedly a great multiplayer game....in fact the pathetically small manual
that comes with the game states that it can only handle SIX players on a
LAN.  Mileage may vary.

Btw, it should be noted that its really the GPL/VROC/GSB combo.  GSB uses
VROC's servers and is just a different front end from the original VROC java
front end.

Scott,

I haven't tried but have heard good things about a track converter
that converts N2/Cart tracks for use with GPL. I'd try it but I gave
my N2 to a friend.
Anyway you might inquire on GSB chat where to get it if it sounds good
to you.
