GP3 - has anyone tried it on a system like mine?

Hi,
I realize that the version of the warez version floating around is
questionable, but I was just wondering if anyone has tried GP3 on a system
like mine:
(AMD K6-2 333, 128MB RAM, Voodoo 2 12MB)  How is the performance?  Are
there many graphics adjustments that can be made to improve framerate?  The
weather system and improved AI sound good.  Graphics are not awefully
important to me (I am almost blind! :) )  I don't mind turning things off
to get a little better framerate. (when you remove the stupid bitmap crowd,
you can replace them with whoever you want in your imagination)

John

I installed it yesterday on my 2nd computer - that is a k6-2 300, 128 mb, V2
12mb. There is only one  way you can get the game to run -
in software mode, 640x480 most details off in about 20 fps.
The Hardware mode will most probably be too slow on your system.
You will most likely be disappointed, so i'd not recommend GP3 for your
current system.

*Hardware* mode is slower than software mode?!!?!?

I'm not questioning your info, but the original purpose of hardware
graphics acclerators seems to have been missed a little by the
creators,

OK, I am running it on a AMD K62-350, 128 sdram, 8 Mb AtI Rage IIc
card.  Runs great in d3d, I have adjusted the res from the default to
800X600 which I find gives better graphics...

How good is great? If this is true, I might yet bother with it...

on slow systems the software mode is faster than the hardware mode,
obviously because the game core is software rendering, and the hardware
rendering is just an overhead to make it look better and add higher
resolutions. When you have a fast system or a fast vid card this overhead
will give you benefit, if you don't then software rendering is the way to
go.

That's bizarre.

Me too, but I got nearly the same occupancy rates in software as in
hardware. It's like the game doesn't use the 3D cards to accellerate the
graphics, just to display them.

I can't believe it's true ... surely Microprose wouldn't allow such a
silly system to ship with their name on it.

I noticed you have a Voodoo2...

Culling through the reviews / problems posts about the warez version, it
sounds like GP3 doesn't like the Voodoo2 card, so you are stuck running
in Software Rendering mode.

Keep in mind that this is a problem on the warez version, so it might
not be a concern with the retail version, but if the final version has
this same problem, it won't be coming home with me.

The last game that I was stuck playing in software rendering mode was
GP2, but time has gone by and that's simply not acceptable anymore...

Hi,
I did notice in the readme that GP3 has problems with V2 SLI, does it
have problems with standard V2 cards?  My card seems to work with other
apps that use D3D on DirectX.

I think what it said was that you'd have to enable SLI mode in some .ini
file but correct me if I'm wrong...

Well, I cant run F1 2K at all..graphics wise, GPL runs but is such a
slow frame rate that its not even worth playing at all.  Run GP2 well.
GP3 runs with d3d and is enjoyable in every way for me, thus the
"great".:-)  I should have qualified that statement more. I feel it is
entirely possible that I simply "lucked out" with the game being
compatible with my piece of junk video card.  But as I read more and
more posts here I am getting the feeling that those of you with very
good video cards (therefore used to that kind of graphics) may be
dissapointed here. Although I cant drive it, I can see the graphics on
GPL.  I can say without any qualms that GP3 graphics arent even close
to GPL's. BUT good enough to be enjoyable and better than GP2's where.

>How good is great? If this is true, I might yet bother with it...

Toni, I appologize.  As I stated I am not that experienced with
sims.......I have been running in software mode not the d3d that I
told you I was.:-(  Let me start again.     It runs great with
everything turned on,  (23 fps) ,  at 1024X768. My ATI Rage IIc 8Mb
card is still a crappy card.  There is no way i can get it to run d3d
with ANY settings changed.  Am I an idiot........possibly.:-)  But I
have played GP2 faithfully and my mistake was because the graphics
were so much better than GP2.  Still love the game, and yes it runs
great for me.:-) Given the choice of upgrading my card or buying this
game I will buy the game without reservation.  The rain effects alone
amaze me.  You can actually watch the racing line dry out after the
rain has stopped. The scenery as well is far more than I ever
expected.  And if you go outside the line while it is drying, the FF
lets you know.:-)  Still a good experience for me.  BUT keep in mind
that I dont play GPL or F1 2K.  (cause of the card).

Cheers
