Nascar 2002, Patch slowdown :( Help...

by Ben Danie » Sun, 19 May 2002 00:07:38

Hi Guys,

Can anyone help? After I loaded in the new Nascar 2002 1.1.0.1 patch,
when driving with the***pit view, I get a terrible slowdown. Down to
about 30 fps. It used to run alot better than that before the patch. I
had completly uninstalled the sim, and then reloaded it, and then
loaded the patch, so it isnt because of it overiding the previous
install.
Even though I only have about 30fps in car, when I watch the replay
from any other camera, I get a good 60fps, which is quite nice and
smooth.
Any advice on how to overcome this, as I cant play the sim like this
:(
This is my main equipment
Athlon 900mhz
256 pc 133 sdram
30gb drive
gforce 2 gts pro
28.32 drivers

Thanks
Ben.

Try copying rend_d3d.dll from the original CD to your installation
directory.

Hey, and some people are so skint they're lucky to get 25fps in a race ;)

While its true that coping the file will work you really should be running
openGL with your Geforce card. With the patch taking advantage of texture
compression you should have better graphics at higher speeds.

D3D does texture compression too. This problem with the patch must be
specific to Nvidia cards because the patch caused no slowdown on my Radeon
8500.

I know D3D does texture compression, but pre patch NR2002 did not do it in
OpenGL. This would cause a mipping down of the textures to get them all to
fit in the cards memory. This mippig down is why alot of people thought
OpenGL looked worse than D3D. So now that NR2002 supports texture
compression in OpenGL there is no reason to run a Geforce based card in D3D.
As far as ATI goes I have not messed with them since my Rage Maxx Fury card
a few years ago.

Sounds like you've got vsync enabled - the patch does this.  You need to
download a tweak for your vidcard to be able to force vsync off in D3D.
Can't remember what said tweak is called - "coolbits" or something.  A
google search will give you plenty hits on the subject.

NVMAX and Geforce tweaker are two other options.

I only get the option for 16 bit color with OpenGL.  Is this correct,
or do I need to play some more "driver roulette".

As an aside, my main problem driver-wise, is finding one that is a)
fast for ***, especially NR2002 and b) won't crash PowerDVD.

TIA,
Gerald

I think OGL will only use the same colour depth as your desktop, try
changing that to 32 bit true colour.

I don't know what happened, but I went back to try it again, and it
did have 32 bit color listed.  I don't recall switching desktop color
depth, but that seems to be the likely explanation.

OpenGL gives my system (AMD 1.4 TBird, Gainward GF3 "Golden Sample")
about a 50% boost in framerate.
