GPL. Will I EVER get bored?

by Kurt Steinboc » Thu, 11 Nov 1999 04:00:00

In a word, nope.

I've been tickled by recent posts about finally breaking the 1:30 barrier at
Monza, after a year of trying.

I know I'm way behind most of you on this, but I almost never drive the
Lotus.  I enjoy the Ferrari so much (with Alison's setups loosened up a bit)
that it's my favorite.  Just a joy to drive.  But on a whim, I downloaded
Ricardo Nunnini's (sorry if I've misspelled your name, Ricardo) setups for
the Lotus and have been smashing my personal best times.

It only took me seven laps at Monza, a little softening up and then twenty
laps at the Glen, and only a single lap at Spa.

So now I can devote the next four to six weeks playing around with the Lotus
and having a renewed BALL.  Then what?  Maybe I'll let some air out of one
of the Ferrari tires and learn how to drive that way.  Who knows?!

What a sim!

Regards,

Kurt

The bigger question is will this newsgroup ever grow tired of the "GPL
is the greatest" threads?

Wake me up when they figure out a way to use the GPL engine in a modern
sim.

Probably, not.  You're bored.  I'm having fun.  Guess I win!

That was me that was!!!

8-)

I forgot to say in my post about finally getting under 1:30,  that I
always drive the Eagle.

8-)

I agree, I've never yet got bored with GPL, I have still not even tried
all the tracks yet (I have never had even one lap at Mexico or at
Dubia?) and I've not tried all the cars (Only tried the Lotus, Ferrari
and Eagle)

The test of a truly great program, game, sim, whatever, is how long it
appeals? I *still* drive GP2, and I'm sure I'll still be driving GPL in
another couple of years....

Until something supersedes GPL, probably not :-)

But everyone here already knows GPL is the best sim. Why do we need to
keep reminding each other? We also know it didn't sell, and we are
reminded of that every time we log on to VROC looking for a race.
Racing the clock isn't what I call racing; I call that qualifying.

Give me a sim with the realism of GPL and the popularity of NASCAR 2
and we will have something to talk about. Right now we sound like a
bunch of Commodore Amiga owners in the mid 1980's telling each other
that the PC isn't any good.

I would think we should all be hoping and praying for such a day.
Just imagine what a sim would be like if it could topple GPL.

That would keep me from seeing a lot of useful information. Setup tips
I'm interested in, hardware issues, driving tips, pretty much anything
but "GPL is the best". Tell me something I don't know.

Oh, that's easy! Just slap CART 3dos on those tires, convert the tracks
of CART2, configure the physics engine for CARTs...

Hey, that should take about a week!

<damn, I hate those wet dreams while being awake!>

1. Start->Sierra->GPL
2. Mode: Training
3. Load Nurburgring
4. Car Ferrari.
5. Leave pits on yet anotheir fun trip around the Ring, (an awesome track
that no other sim ever had the balls to model).
6. Say to yourself again "GPL is the Greatest"

You now understand why even one year after release people still post
"GPL is the Greatest", not one "modern" sim has come close, although
personally I would love to drive a modern F1 or CART sim with equal physics.

Seeyas on the track.
