What to do if GPL gets BORING!!!

by Pickar » Sun, 14 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I have been racing GPL since it came out..  I like to think I am pretty
good..  (within about a second of the fastest laps) and enjoyed it up
until about a  month ago...

I got to the stage where I just couldn't go any faster...   My setups
were so hard and fast.. that it was hard to RACE with them..  but if I
didn't I couldn't keep up....

Then ..   I discovered racing with the other CARS!!!!!

Firstly..  they are slow as AOL...!!!!!     really slow..  BUT..  they
are actually heaps of fun!!!  (remember that   :-)

I then tried a race with a friend both using the Coventry..  WOW!!!!!!!

I have never had SSOOO much fun in my entire racing career..  (including
REAL LIFE racing, and PRC champ. points races)...

What was the most important thing..  LOW LAT...     I was just racing
with one friend....  and was getting  .333 latency..  GREAT!!!!!

We could now run REAL close..

The next race I tried we both ran the same setup..   and WOW.. even
better racing!!!

In a 6 lap race.. we swapped postitions about 11
times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the replay to prove it too....

So if GPL is getting frustrating and boring..  (have to have a secret
setup to go fast)..  then try racing with Alison's COV setup with low
LAT to someone else with exactly the same setup...   it is TOTALY
INCREDIBLE>..   Real FUN racing....

I am now thinking of starting up my own Coventry only league..  JUST for
GREAT RACING...   amazing how close it gets...

PS.. Alison's setups aren't great..  not very fast..  but handle OK..
and provide awesome racing...

Man how can the AI be slow unless you modified it or you deleted your
player.sts and wiped out all your lap times.

I wanted to race real ppl...  The AI are OK..  good challenge.  but I am
loving racing the COV..  like I said.. it is slow.. but just GREAT FUN..  you
can "chuck" it around and actually go fast!!   ish.....

I just raced online at Rouen.. and did my fastest lap by 3 secondS!!!!!  So I
really need the "real life" challenge to get anything out of it...

Wish you'd have been in the Coventry last night, JP. :-)  With a 1:56:68, I
think you'll find your Rouen AI gets a bit feisty now.  Since racing online on
my PC, half the field runs under 2:00 now - without any odd warp-influenced
times!  They're loads of fun now.

go!<<

Arrgghh!  Too bad, but t'weren't me. I bailed early, unable to face wobbling
around yet another lap on cold tires after my little green car's motor expired
the second time.  I wonder if a small-block Chevy'll fit back there.

See you at Spa,

Do the times of other people you race online have an effect on global hype
or is it just your own times?

>Who won that race last night?  I got disco'd out of the lead with 1/4 lap
>to go!  Damn! Talk about frustrating!

We all were disconnected at the same time!  Jack's replay file grew too big
and caused Windows to swap out parts of GPL causing a massive crash.
Frustrating for sure, particularly being that close to the end.

is it just your own times?<<

Anecdotally, I'd say any human driver's time affects the AI.  My times haven't
dropped much, if at all, since first racing online, but where before only 2 or
3 of the AI were under 2:00 at Rouen, now 9 or 10 are.  I don't know how GPL's
global hype operates regarding laptime averaging , but it sure seems affected
by online races.  You do read posts where oddball warped times have the whole
field running absurdly fast.  I backup my player.sts file before online races
just in case, but I can't bring myself to reset the AI as a result of
legitimately quick laps.  So thanks a lot, all you speed demons, for making my
offline life hard.  I haven't kissed the trophy girl in days!

Cheers,

Steve B.
