Help! Steering wheel with F1RS

by Kulvinder Singh Matha » Sat, 20 Jun 1998 04:00:00

OK,

I've got the F1 SIM steering wheel and pedals and have been quite
happy operating it in joystick mode while I played F1RS (3Dfx version
on my Orchid Righteous).

I thought perhaps that I may want to experiment hitting the brakes
while still engaging the throttle...simple, I'll switch the F1 SIM to
two-joystick mode which I did be setting its switch to Position 2. I
calibrated the F1 SIM under Win95. I also downloaded Patch 1.08 for
F1RS as I had heard that F1RS had difficulty with wheels & pedals.

Anyway, I got into F1RS and set the controls and F1RS recognised all
the buttons and the pedals/steering wheel movements in the control
configuration.

However, when I got onto the race circuit I ran into problems...I had
all the controls that were asked for EXCEPT FOR THE BRAKES! Of course
that made driving around the circuit very slow.

I then got my old CH Virtual Pilot Pro with pedals (switched to Car
Mode) and calibrated this under Win95 as well. Went into F1RS and set
the controls. But, again, I HAD NO BRAKES when I was driving around
on the circuit.

Is there anyone out there who can help me out? Is there some
particular Win95 calibration that I should be using, etc. I want to
set my F1 SIM to two-joystick mode...of course I am assuming that
F1RS WILL process brakes and throttle inputs at the same time.

Can anyone help please? Thanks in advance.

PS
I patched F1RS straight from the retail version to the Patch 1.08
without getting any intermediate patches as I was under the
impression that Patch 1.08 had all the previous patches.

Again, thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've got a F1 Sim too, and yes, when I use the separated pedals option
the same problem occurs. The reason is that DirectInput, a part of
DirectX, does not support wheels with multiple axes if an axis is
skipped.

AFAIK there is no solution for this.

The current patch level is 1.09. Alas, it doesn't help your (and mine)
problem.

.

Yes. You can have up to four analog inputs at the same time.
Brake ,throttle and clutch at the same time along with steering.
Did you calibrate as 3 axis custom controller in W95?
Was the brake moving an axis independant  of the throttle in
W95 setup?

All later patches incude previous patches. But your brake should work
anyway.

Here a post I wrote earlier. I hope it will help.

A PC game port allows for 4 buttons (momentary on switches that are
"normally open") and 4 variable controls that are usually known as joystick
movements for horizontal that are called the X-axis and vertical as the
Y-axis. A 100k Ohm potentiometer (variable resistor) is used for controlling
an axis.
These four axis were originally used for two joysticks and labeled:
1 joystick 1 X-axis
2 joystick  1 Y-axis
3 joystick  2  X-axis
4 joystick  2  Y-axis
Some steering controllers use joystick 1 X-axis for steering and joystick
Y-axis for both throttle and brake. For separate throttle and brake you
could use joystick 1 Y-axis for throttle, joystick 2 X-axis for brake and if
the game allows joystick 2 Y-axis for clutch.
Any of these axes can be used for any type of variable movement a game lets
you control such as movement in a direction, rudder, steering, brake,
throttle, clutch etc.
W95 allows you to setup a 2, 3 or 4 of these axes to a joystick or custom
controller; however, you must have them in sequence.
That is, If you tell W95 Game Controller setup that you have a 2 axis
controller then W95 looks for the first two axes (joy 1 X-axis and joy 1
Y-axis) to be connected. If you are trying to use a different set of two
axes then W95 will say, "not connected".
You need to have for a
2 axis controller joy 1 X-axis and joy 1 Y-axis
3 axis  controllerjoy 1 X-axis, joy 1 Y-axis, and joy 2 X-axis
4 axis controller.all four axes connected.
The four buttons do not need to be connected.
A "Y" connector cable for  two joystick use does not connect all four axes
to both ends and may not work. Different brand steering controller and pedal
combinations might not use the correct axes setup for W95.
Here are the game port pins and their use:
Pin #                           use
1,8,9,15+5volt dc for any axis
2button 1
3joy 1 X-axis
4,5,12...ground for buttons
6joy 1 Y-axis
7button 2
10..button 3
11..joy 2 X-axis
13..joy 2 Y-axis
14..button 4

Good Luck :-)

Depending on how the axis are defined you maybe able to use the
Thrustmater NASCAR Pro w/separate pedals selection in the Game
Controllers applet (you may need to get Thrustmaster's ProPanel for
this setup
<ftp://208.129.210.78/pub/library/calibration/propanelv11.exe>).

Or you will need to create a "custom" setup for the Game Controllers
applet.  First remove the device you currently are using from the Game
Controllers setup.  Select Add and choose "custom".  Try setting it up
as a 4-axis.  Check the Special Characteristics box and the Is a Race
Car Controller radio button.  Calibrate the device and then test it.  If
this doesn't work try it as a 3-axis device.

Thanks for this info. I've got a feeling. From another post it seems
that F1SIM doesn't calibrate very well under DirectInput as there is
an axis missing...I'm now thinking that F1SIM may skip an axis. I'm
going to try and find out and if I get a fix I'll post it here :-)

Thanks again.

OK then, I found that F1SIm does indeed skip an axis..."joy 2 X-axis"
is missing on the F1SIM. But with your info above I cut open the
cable and rewired it such that Pins 11 and 13 were transposed.

Well, it all works now!!! Thanks to all of you that posted here :

Lutrell Harms for the Pin #
Remco Moedt confirming that he had the same probs on his F1SIM
Michael E. Carver for the Thrustmaster Pro calibration software.

Thanks all!
