Actually, I have to agree with Eldred on this one. If I recall correctly,
Andretti Racing was actually my first PC racing game, and it prompted me to buy
my first wheel............. Go figure....

From humble beginnings start great obsessions....8-)

Unless you were born in the 1970's so you were old enough to enjoy
the first wave of electronic arcade games, you wouldn't remember it. :)

The original Demolition Derby was a blast. Nice black and white
monitor placed face up in a table style cabinet with 4 or maybe six
steering wheels and other controls around it. The later incarnation
of demo derby in color with higher resolution graphics was a real
*** to control. Looked pretty though.

I can remember when Space Invaders came out. :) we probably didn't get
everything here in norway. :(

The one I remember is one where you had to steer a car (or two in two-player
games) and try to run over as many pedestrians as possible in order to score
points (a tombstone appearing in their place after you ran them over). Can't
forget the name of that one... it was in the very first arcade hall that opened
here in the late 70s...

Going to be contentious but..........GP 3 took the biscuit by a long
way.Never have I been so disappointed by a piece of Software ,,,well maybe

somebody forget the *nice* games SEGA did once try to sell on PC .. undrivable
... and ... maybe Viper Racing ... for some reason you cannot drive that with a
keyboard ... I spend 2 minutes doing 3 corners and then smartly used the -
excellent - option : uninstall, that function was great !

Viper Racing a bad racing game because you can't play it with a
keyboard.. Right..

As a second follow up...

Just picked up Al Unser Jr Turbo Racing for the NES I bought recently.
Man...the game is over 10 years old and it is still as ***ing as
the first time I played it. The purchasing of upgrades to the car was
way ahead of its time, and the racing is nearly on par with Pit Stop 2
(well, the colecovision and commodore 64 versions - the pc version is
amazingly bad) and Pole Position 2, the other really killer 80's
racing games.

Oh yeah, as far as CART goes. CART Flag-to-Flag for the Dreamcast is
one of the best arcade racers I've ever played. Finished a 100% race
at Laguna Seca with full damage/full course yellows yesterday. Makes
me with Papy would give it another go. =/
