Video card for use with MS CART Prec Racing - HELP!

by Scott & Laurie Stob » Sat, 22 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm currently wanting to upgrade my graphics card to get better frame rates
on CART Precision Racing but I  don't want to spend much money.  Anyone have
any good suggestions?  One card I'm interested in in particular is the
Matrox M3d.  Anyone know how well this works?

Thanks for your help its much appreciated.

Put it this way, if someone offers you an M3d for free, decline! Sounds like your
running CPR in software mode. You really are a glutton for punishment! :) Tell us your CPU
and graphics card else it's hard to know what an upgrade is for you.

Your right - I am currently running in software mode and it is driving me
nuts.  My current configuration is as follows.

Pentium 166MMX
ATI 3d Expression 2MB Video Card.

How about the Diamond Monster 3D?  Would it be much better?

Thanks for your much appreciated help.

In a word: YES.  Any voodoo1 or voodoo2 card will do the trick.  It is still
the way to go for simmers.  Though the Renditions also have a lot of support
in auto sims.  But go voodoo for universal support and consistently high
speed.

I agree-I run CPR/F1RS on a 166mmx, 32mb ram and a diamond monster 3d and they
fly-very smooth to watch as well, although you have to turn replays/sky off in
F1RS to really enjoy it, but who watches sky when you're racing? Schumey?

If your're on a budget, an i740 based card such as the Diamond G460 at
around $75 USD from online stores would be a good bet. Better visual
quiality than a voodoo 1 and a bit faster too. Also supports Direct 3D and
Open Gl (Diamond have new drivers out). 3dfx not so good for CPR although
there was an unauthorised file available which allowed 3dfx mode - but bang
for buck the G460 or similar i740 card is the way to go.
