I don't know if you have thought about this Ruud, but do you have any
plans to support gmax? It is a free download from discreet.com and it
is basically a version of 3D Studio MAX designed for making 3rd party
game content. It ships with Flight Sim 2002 Pro, and it also supports
Quake 3 among others.

I just wondered if Racer can support this because it might open up
modelling to a whole bunch of people who can't afford 3D Studio. Check
it out at http://www.racesimcentral.net/, its about a 25Mb
d/l.

Just a thought,

Nick.

It also costs 80,000 to buy a developers licence to enable it to be used
with a project.

So it's possible if somebody gives me the 80,000 quid. ;-)
Although you can d/l the Tempest Quake version for free, and output
MD3 models, which I at some point halfly supported (an MD3 importer in
Modeler).
Unfortunately that format still looks a bit Doom2-ish (bad vertex
resolution), and is unsuitable for cutting edge modeling of low- and
high-scale objects.

And somehow I doubt Discreet would give me a free license.
So Max or Maya or Lightwave it is (there was someone working on a
Lightwave exporter). Or ZModeler.

Blender went open source a couple of weeks ago; I think it
might be worth looking into. It's available for Linux and
Windows and has gathered quite a following (in fact the
communty rallied 100,000 euros so that the source code could be
published under the GPL).

How about Maya Personal Learning Edition?  I haven't even tried it, but
it comes with UT 2003 and I think can be downloaded for free if you
register.

Well, you could always start selling Teddy Bears to fund it :-)

Yes yes I know......I'll probably go to hell or something

I didn't mean that, I meant along the lines of people d/l it for free,
create models (say for Q3), then run it through a converter to create
Racer models. So Racer doesn't *officially* support it, but there is a
way of turning the output into a format Racer uses....

Hehe, and if that works well, you can stop programming and keeping
selling those Teddy Bears. ;-)

I guess we'll meet up there then. :)

I think with all these types of cheap/free versions, it's either a
problem of undocumented file formats or just plain illegal to use the
program for this purpose.
Ofcourse, that last thing is quite a thin line, as with MD3 output for
GMax (which works, although unfortunately the MD3 format is a bit too
limiting for Racer in some respects).
