Er, I got 459 on the default settings of 1024 x 768 x 32. My card doesn't
support either AA or bumpmapping though, so those tests got missed out.
Reducing down to 640 x 480 x 16 managed to up my score to 611.

Not too impressive - if anyone has any suggestions as to my best options for
upgrading on a *BUDGET* then I'd be more than happy to hear them! :0)

Cheers,
Jim

You're best bet right now is a faster processor. Not too familiar with the
BX6, but can't you slap a coppermine or a celeron 2 in there? That shouldn't
cost more than ~100.

After that you might want to focus on new video card. You can get excellent
deals on Voodoo5 cards, but you're out of luck as far as driver support
goes. The good news is it works with GPL and N4, so at least you have a
strong fall back position. ;)

This sounds like the sort of advice I need :0)
Thanks Tim. Now my only question is what's a coppermine?

Sorry, I'm new to the cpu game. I suspect it's an Intel chip but don't know
what speeds they're available in, and what the max speed I can use is
(although I think it's 600 mhz for my BX6 Rev 1)

Cheers for your help though

coppermine is indeed the insider name for an Intel chip.  Your bx6 board
should
be able to get a new bios file that will allow you to upgrade to a much
faster
cpu than just 600.  If you did go to a 600 you'd be already slower than
whats needed
for some sims...I can't stress this enough...get as much cpu as you can
afford...memory, vid cards they all help, but if you have a weak cpu...you
are just hamstringing everything
else.

Wow!  Impressionnant ton overclocking.  Pour le faire fonctionner tu dois
mettre ton PC dehors au frette?   ;-)

The Abit BIOS update page for the BX6 Revision 1.....
http://www.abit.com.tw/english/download/bios%20update/bios-bx6.htm
.....seems to suggest that a PIII 600 is as fast as I can go with this mobo.
I'd really like it now if someone could prove that this is wrong......

Cheers

Jim

Scroll down that same page & read the notes for the ID:HV BIOS update
dated 01/25/99.  It states that clock multipliers up to 8x are
supported.  8x100=800Mhz.  I'd say she'll take more than 600.....

From what I've seen, 3DMark2001 requires DX8, which I haven't loaded yet.  My
system works fine now, and I don't have any games that need it.  So, I haven't
fixed what isn't broken.<g>

Anyway, is there a version that runs under DX7a?  I'm curious about my system's
performance...

Last years 3D Mark 2000 uses DX7 and will show much higher (maybe even
double) on most new systems because it was made to test last years systems
that were designed for DX 7. The scores are all relative to what the test
was designed for.
