Nascar3 - Problems with the 3D car modeling?

by Ed Ba » Sun, 05 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Check out this current screenshot from Nascar3:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Is that a Taurus or Lumina? If so, what's with the huge
'bumper' and square-ish hood line?

I saw these boxy cars, with big bumpers, all through the
development screenshots, and assumed they were simply
development cars, but hey, this thing has gone gold.

Here is a real Taurus:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

I realize that things can be changed by the add-on gurus,
but it would seem to be unnecessarily difficult to make
these cars look like Luminas, Tauruses, and etc.

Also, notice the roofline. Has anyone seen a lot of current
day WC cars with an angular rear slope like that ?

Am I crazy, or is something really wrong here, and the
N3 cars are never going to resemble the real-life cars?

Ed,

Just as with N99...  Sierra/Papy has to use a generic model race car due to
licensing issues.  Don't worry... there are people already working on
designing the 2000 Taurus, Monte, and Grand Prix .pcx files for N3.

Scott, is it a paintshop (.PCX) issue, or a 3D-model issue? Those
are awfully big bumpers and it took a while before that issue in
N1999 was fixed (to some extent) by an addon maker.

It seems very silly to make cars whose -shape- doesn't resemble
1999 stock cars. Unfortunately, the shapes of the N3 cars are
clobbered by the NR cars. Now THAT is sad..

Ed,

What good are the car shapes in NR if you can't do anything with them ;))
Pretty screenshots??  <G>

It will work pretty much like N2/N99 did when people turned the Thunderbird into
the Taurus.  Im not talking about 3do files and the data files or such.  Im
referring to the .pcx files only.

Ive been running N3 alot lately and the last thing I have noticed is
"unrealistic" car shapes <G>

I think everyone will be pleaseantly surprised by the car models in N3.  In
more than one way.  And yes the templates have already been  created by an
*artist*.

says...

First, all three of the cars in that screen shot are supposed to be
Pontiacs (in real life).

Second, it looks like Papy painted all of the cars to look like Monte
Carlos (like they did in NR1999).

Third, it looks like the improved carshape guys are gonna have to do
their magic all over again.

Fourth, it also looks like the improved paintjob guys are gonna have to
do their magic all over again as well.

Nascar3 - Problems with the 3D car modeling?

I find myself more e***d by NASCAR Legends.  From everything I've read,
it's using the N3 engine with tweaks for the old-timers, mainly bias-ply
tires, some different setup options, and no pitlane speed limit.  The
graphics look VERY nice - I was actually surprised to see in the screenshots
that they indeed did have different models for the Ford / Mercury models and
the Chyrsler products.  We get to run a real 'Bird with rear wing and the
aero nose!!  Some neat tracks too - the Ontario Indy clone should be a blast
in the old muscle cars.  And Riverside!

Hard to tell from the screenshots, but these cars seem to be accurately
sized, i.e. bigger than the modern cars - should make Bristol feel even
smaller - and if that's not small enough we've got Bowman Gray Stadium.
Multiplayer should be interesting :-)

I may pick this one up and give it a good workout before getting N3 - if I
get both the same weekend I won't get anything done :-)

I'm with you there Ken. I'll be buying Nascar Legends as soon as possible
just to be able to run Riverside. I well remember the old full size stockers
running at RIR, slippin' and slidin' around on bias ply tires.

I hope someone is able to convert the track for use with GPL, even if we can
only run the Nascar course, and not the full GP circuit.
