gpl nocd patch

I'm trying to make a cd of my entire gpl folder, including all patches
setups and stuff so that I can just copy the entire folder to my new hd.
I want to make 1 single disk with all stuff on it so that I don't have to
mess around with 2 cd's everyime I have to reinstall it.
I just need the no-cd patch so hat I can copy it all from the cdr to my hd
and play right away.
This is not for piracy issues as I have the original disk, I swear! ;)

    TIA!

Just two things to consider.

1st, From what I've been told you'll first need to run install from the
original disk otherwise the controller systems won't be set up in the
registry and GPL won't see your controller.

2nd, If you copy all your files from a CD to your HD, they will have the
attributes set to read only so you will not be able to alter your setups,
your player.ini won't record your best lap times etc. I would add the GPL
folder to a self extracting zip before burning to a CD, then you can unzip
from the CD to your HD and that will keep the attributes as they were.
In fact, that's such a good idea, I'm going to do it now ! :)

Everybody who is serious about GPL should do something like this. I zip my
entire GPL folder and save that Zip file on a separate partition. I then FTP
that Zip file to my work PC so if my hard drive dies I can recover GPL
easily.

(Almost nothing else on my PC is backed up...)

Better than that I just burn the C:\Sierra\GPL directory to a CD-R
(minus the replay directory) and it all fits on one handy CD-R. The
only bad thing is when you restore, everything is read only.

Yeah, that was Ian P's point - if you Zip first you don't have any problem
with read only files. (I don't have a CDR but I do have a fast Net
connection, so FTP is my alternative).

gpl nocd patch

So I still need the 2 disks...no problem, I can't patch gpl.exe with the
nocdpatch anyway because the gpl.exe isn't original anymore. Obviously I've
done something that changed the gpl.exe, dunno what though.

So if I zip my entire gpl folder to a cdr, what should I do next to make gpl
work exactly the same? Install gpl from the original disk and replace
everything in the gpl folder by the zip on the cdr, right??

Even easier, you don't need to bother installing from the original. Just
unzip the CDR to a folder on your hard drive and create a shortcut to
GPL.EXE. GPL doesn't really need anything from the Registry.

GPL-related tools like ReplayAnalyzer may not be able to find GPL without
you telling them where it is, but that's no big deal.

I'm not sure if the add-in track installer will work, but it should as long
as you tell it where GPL lives.

I've done this with my work PC and it works fine. I don't run GPL here, I
just use it as a backup and sometimes to watch replays - my boss doesn't
think a wheel at work enhances productivity...

You don't have a wheel at work, that's why you don't have any problem with
installing by copying direct :)
The wheel (so I've heard) needs to use the driver which is linked via the
registry. I haven't actually tried it though, just going on rumours ;)

You can copy the original GPL.exe from the original GPL CD to your GPL
folder, uncheck read only then you can run the no CD patch on it. You can
run any other addon programs that alter the GPL.exe after the no CD patch.
Once you have everything how you like it you can zip it and put it on CDR.

When you come to reinstall, install GPL from the original disk, then unzip
your CDR to the GPL folder, it will overwrite all the files in there.

You may want to try just unzipping the CDR to your HD and see if it works,
as I said, I've been told you need something in the registry to make the
steering work but I can't guarantee that.
If it doesn't work just move that folder to a temporary foler eg
C:/Temp/Sierra/GPL , install GPL normally then move C:/Temp/Sierra/GPL back
to C:/Sierra/GPL and let it replace the files already there.

Maybe the Papy wheel driver does (I dunno), but I'm using DirectX drivers
because I have a force feedback wheel. Hopefully that doesn't rely on GPL
Registry settings.

I've introduced my boss and a couple of co-workers to GPL, so I hope soon to
have a GPL LAN day here, and I can try my wheel here. GPL on my work PIII
733/GeForce should be nice compared to my home PII 333/Voodoo3!

My boss and co-workers are hooked on Diablo 2.  I've never been able to get
people interested in driving games... :(
