Ok, I'm incredibly computer illiterate and I have no idea what 3dfx is
or voodoo, and what difference does it make if it?

That's ok, illiterates are also welcome, as long as they love sim racing!

3dfx is the name of a graphics chip manufacturer. One of the chips they're
making is called VooDoo and it sits on a graphics card. Graphic cards of
these kinds (there are lots of types and different kind, with different
image quality and speed). These cards will do:
1) Wonders with your racing sim image
2) Wonders with your frame rate
3) Wonders with the general joy of racing sims
As you might see now, these cards are a must for any serious racing
simmer. The ones with the best image are arguably, the VooDoo chips and
Rendition, Voodoo is for high framerates, Rendition is value for money...
