I just read the interview with RC and DK, and something stuck out for me
also. There was a question and then the following response:

"[Olav_Malmin]   speaking of old games, how about a direct3D patch for ICR2,
too shut us champcar fans up a little bit ? :)

[Randy_Cassidy]   Oh, c'mon. Like you'd still want to play a game with THAT
physics engine :-) "

To me, this says 'Why play the old ICR2 with updated graphics and old
physics engine, when we're actually going to be working on a new cart game
with new physics engine' ?

I could be totally wrong of course, but as soon as I read this, that's what
I thought. If not champcars, at the very least, an open wheel sim.

But Dave K's later comment about not racing GPL very much anymore kinda
murky's that up.  He races N4 because the tire model in GPL is pretty basic.
Heck I don't even know if ICR2 HAS a tire model.:)  So perhaps its not that
something else is coming but that the advances they have already made have
left ICR2 and GPL behind.

Wishful thinking, isn't it ? :)

I kind of have the impression of a new CART sim too, but the answer
may also just be what it is saying. The game is terribly old, so why
bother playing it. :)

Generally, i got a very positive feeling after that chat session that
something really great might happen.

I read the GPL manual and I believe it states somewhere that the tires
are so hard that they can last 3 or 4 races.  That's how it was in
1967.  So why is this "basic"?

And why did they use such hard tires? Surely they knew the advantages of
sticky tires, and pit stops to change tires was used in other racing
series at the time. (And earlier.) I can understand using tires so
hard that they lasted one race to avoid having to pit., but a weekend?
Or several weekends?

Even hard tires flex, undergo wear, heat cycle, deform their contact patch
under load, and flat spot. Perhaps what Dave K meant was that GPL's tire
modelling did not take as many of these factors into consideration (or at
least not to the same degree) as N4's tire modelling and that he was no
longer happy with GPLs' level of complexity in those calculations. Wonder if
Papy would be interested in releaseing  a patch (unsupported of course :) )
that would import N4s tire modelling into GPL?

Just wondering , is all :)

Actually, I don't think DK was refering to tyre-wear.  He mentions that the
tyre model in GPL doesn't cope with high-speeds as well as the N4 one.

According to the interview with John Cooper, they didn't run "three or four
race weekends" on the tyres- they ran one race.

I just assume they mean that they wouldn't be the shredded mess you see in
parc ferme in a modern F1 race, but then listening to a Stirling Moss
interview about being down to the canvas of his tyres on the last lap, I
doubt that's true either. I accept that Moss's description is of an earlier
era (I forget the specific race and year, it was on an episode of "The Power
and the Glory", but pre 67 tyres wore out in the race, and post 67 tyres
wear out in the race- what makes 67 so different? I'll tell you: an excuse
for no proper tyre wearing code is what makes 67 different.

cheers
John

Dave K. gave another interview within the last year that included a very
broad hint about Papyrus having tested a high downforce open wheel sim.
